Several players were removed from games on July 19. But perhaps the most notable injury-related news on the day came from the Dodgers, as Shohei Ohtani won’t be starting on the mound anytime soon.
Basallo exits
Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo was removed in the second inning of Baltimore’s series finale versus the Astros.
It was due to a right shoulder injury.
Witt Jr. played through back injury
Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. did not play on the 19th thanks to back tightness.
Witt Jr. was playing through the injury one day earlier (h/t MLB.com).
Carroll leaves with elbow injury
Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll was pulled on July 19 with a hyperextended elbow.
Carroll is day-to-day, per manager Torey Lovullo.
Ohtani won’t start versus Phillies
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that TWP Shohei Ohtani (knee) will not pitch in the club’s upcoming series versus the Phillies. Additionally, Roberts noted that Ohtani won’t be pitching anytime soon.
Ohtani did play both games of the club’s doubleheader versus the Yankees.
IL moves
Nationals reliever PJ Poulin went on the 15-day IL with a left flexor strain, retroactive to July 16.
The Royals placed pitcher Stephen Kolek on the 15-day IL with a right flexor strain.
Will Vest (elbow inflammation), Ryan Helsley (right elbow discomfort), and Richard Lovelady (left triceps strain) were transferred to the 60-day IL.
Rehab assignments
Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. went 0-2 with a walk and a strikeout as the DH for Triple-A Gwinnett. Also in that same game, Ha-Seong Kim went 1-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
Dodgers utilityman Enrique Hernandez went 1-5 with a strikeout for Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Mariners infielder Brendan Donovan went 0-3 for Triple-A Tacoma, while Rob Refsnyder went 1-4 with a strikeout.
White Sox outfielder Austin Hays went 1-3 with two strikeouts for Triple-A Charlotte.
Twins pitcher Connor Prielipp struck out three over three scoreless innings (32 pitches) for Triple-A St. Paul. Prielipp averaged 97 MPH and topped out at 98 MPH.
Tigers pitcher Jackson Jobe struck out three over three scoreless innings (44 pitches) for Double-A Erie.
Nationals pitcher Jake Irvin struck out five over 4.2 IP (51 pitches) for Double-A Harrisburg.
The Nationals also had Trevor Williams rehab in High-A Wilmington. Williams struck out three over 3.1 IP for the Blue Rocks across 60 pitches. He gave up six hits and two walks.
Other notes
Marlins infielder Otto Lopez (finger) did not play on the 19th. The Astros held Christian Walker (hip) and Jeremy Pena (hamstring) out, as well.
