Boston had a chance to make their winning streak a lucky #13 on July 19 — and the Red Sox did just that. That also opened up the door for the Yankees to make up some ground on the Rays.
Red Sox win 13th in a row
The Red Sox won 6-1, completing the four-game sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Victor Mesa Jr. drove in the lone run, as he hit an inside-the-park home run to temporarily give the Rays a 1-0 lead. But the Sox would score six unanswered off Shane McClanahan, highlighted by a Willson Contreras home run in the fifth.
Sonny Gray allowed just one run over six innings, as he notched his 12th win of the year.
Yanks and Dodgers split
The Yankees and Dodgers split a doubleheader necessitated by rain in New York on the 18th.
Despite eight strikeouts from Cam Schlittler, the Dodgers were able to chase him in the fifth. Shohei Ohtani, Max Muncy, and Tommy Edman each had two hits in the 8-2 Dodgers win, while Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out seven over a complete game.
In the second game, Edman struck again, as he hit a solo shot to tie the game in the eighth inning. But later that inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a solo home run of his own to make it 2-1, a score that would stay the same.
Padres score 19
The Royals went up 1-0 in the first thanks to a Jac Caglianone home run on the 19th. However, that score didn’t hold for long, as San Diego wound up winning 19-2.
Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run single in the second, followed by a Jackson Merrill RBI single and Manny Machado RBI sac fly. The Padres’ offense would score in seven of the nine innings, including 11 combined between the eighth and ninth innings.
Jackson Merrill had four hits, including a home run, while Sung Mun Song and Luis Rengifo each had three.
Brewers sweep Marlins
The Brewers swept the Marlins thanks to a walk-off, three-run shot from William Contreras in the ninth inning.
Miami had a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. Eury Perez struck out nine over six scoreless innings, and the lone run of the game — to that point — was via an Esteury Ruiz solo home run.
But in the ninth, Pete Fairbanks surrendered a single to Jackson Chourio and a walk to Brice Turang. That set the stage for Contreras’ 10th home run of the season.
Mariners move to .500
Logan Gilbert struck out for the Mariners, who bested former Seattle pitcher Robbie Ray and the Giants 6-3.
Ray had trouble keeping runners off the bases, as he surrendered seven hits and two walks. He struck out six but only lasted four innings. However, he left the Giants in a tied game. However, things quickly turned in Seattle’s favor.
Luke Raley hit a solo shot in the sixth to make it a 4-3 game. Later on, in the seventh, Cole Young hit his 13th home run to make it a 6-3 contest.
The Mariners are now 50-50.
