With the Blue Jays trying to keep their playoff hopes alive this coming week in Baltimore, the club will have to do it without Dylan Cease. The Cubs, meanwhile, won on September 20 but lost Alex Bregman thanks to a bizarre injury.
Bregman hit by foul ball
The Cubs saw Alex Bregman suffer a head injury on September 20 while the third baseman was in the on-deck circle.
Michael Busch, during the fourth inning, check swung, and fought off a fastball that went foul and bounced before hitting Bregman in the head. Bregman was seen to have a bloody nose before leaving the field of play.
Per the Cubs, Bregman was set to undergo tests.
Cease to be examined
The Blue Jays are going to push back Dylan Cease‘s start, as Toronto seeks to figure out what exactly is ailing the right-hander.
Toronto confirmed that Cease will not start during the club’s series against the Orioles. Cease will undergo an MRI on his shoulder.
This news comes after Cease had a noticeable dip in velocity over his past few outings.
IL moves
Chase Burns‘ breakout 2026 season is over. Burns was placed on the 15-day IL with a right groin strain, two days after he was removed from his final start of the year against the Cubs.
The Rangers placed pitcher Cal Quantrill on the 15-day IL with a right lat strain.
Huascar Brazoban (White Sox), Tyron Guerrero (Red Sox), and Ben Williamson (Rays) were activated off the injured list.
Rehab assignments
The Braves had two relievers make rehab outings for Triple-A Gwinnett. Joe Jimenez struck out one and allowed two hits over 0.2 IP. Robert Suarez struck out one over a scoreless inning.
Athletics infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer went 1-for-3 with a walk for Triple-A Las Vegas.
Blue Jays OF/DH Anthony Santander went 0-for-2 with three walks for Triple-A Buffalo.
Rangers catcher Kyle Higashioka went 2-for-4 with Triple-A Round Rock.
Nationals pitcher Connelly Early walked three and struck out two over 1.2 IP for Triple-A Rochester.
Cubs pitcher Riley Martin struck out two over one scoreless inning for Triple-A Iowa.
Other notes
Per the Yankees, Trent Grisham will not return during the Yankees’ final regular-season homestand versus the Rays & Orioles. Grisham may return during the playoffs.
The Blue Jays pulled Vladimir Guerrero Jr. early with back tightness.
Willson Contreras (hand), Xavier Edwards (thumb), Bryce Eldridge (head), and Brandon Nimmo (illness) were out of their teams’ respective lineups on the 20th.
