August 29 was a big one for the Diamondbacks, as the club saw Corbin Burnes in a game for the first time since mid-2025. The Dodgers, meanwhile, will need to wait until Shohei Ohtani can pitch in a game again.
Ohtani won’t start this weekend
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts stated that Shohei Ohtani will not start on August 30 against the Tigers.
The hope was that Ohtani, after throwing a bullpen session on the 28th, would be able to start this weekend. However, Ohtani reported soreness afterwards.
Lombard Jr. left Game 2
Yankees shortstop George Lombard Jr. was removed early during the nightcap of the club’s doubleheader on August 29.
Lombard Jr. is dealing with right knee discomfort, per the team.
Rengifo carted off
Padres infielder Luis Rengifo had to be carted off against the Rays after he hurt his knee while attempting to throw home.
Per the club, Rengifo suffered a sprained knee.
IL moves
Juan Soto was activated off the injured list on August 29, without requiring a rehab assignment. Garrett Whitlock and Max Fried were also activated.
Giants utilityman Casey Schmitt was transferred to the 60-day IL.
Rehab assignments
Corbin Burnes returned to the mound on August 29 with Triple-A Reno. Burnes tossed two scoreless innings over an efficient 17 pitches. Burnes averaged and topped out at 93 MPH.
The Red Sox’s trio of rehabbers were back in Triple-A Worcester. Roman Anthony went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. Isiah Kiner-Falefa went 2-for-4, and Trevor Story went 1-for-3.
Tigers outfielder Riley Greene went 0-for-4 with a strikeout for Triple-A Toledo.
Mets infielder Mark Vientos went 3-for-4 with a home run for Triple-A Syracuse.
Dodgers catcher Will Smith went 2-for-4 as the DH for Triple-A Oklahoma City. Justin Wrobleski, also on rehab, pitched out of the bullpen, throwing 34 pitches for the Comets. Wrobleski struck out two over 1.1 IP.
White Sox catcher Kyle Teel went 1-for-3 with three strikeouts for Triple-A Charlotte.
The Yankees had two rehabbers with Double-A Somerset. Ryan McMahon went 0-for-3, while Clarke Schmidt allowed two hits, one of which was a home run, and struck out two over 0.2 IP.
Other notes
Cade Cavalli was removed from his start against the Marlins with knee discomfort.
Byron Buxton (hip) was out on August 29.
