A flurry of players landed on the injured list to start the Memorial Day weekend, as Mickey Moniak and Matt Shaw were among those who are sidelined due to injury. Trevor Story, who was previously on the IL, will be out for at least a month and a half thanks to recent surgery.
Muncy avoids serious injury
Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy was forced out of Los Angeles’ game against the Brewers. Muncy took a 96 MPH fastball from Aaron Ashby that ran in on him and got the wrist.
Manager Dave Roberts indicated after the contest that X-rays came back negative.
Story had hernia surgery
Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story underwent sports hernia surgery, the team announced on May 22.
The expectation is that Story will need six to 10 weeks of recovery time.
IL moves
A shoulder strain forced Cardinals outfielder Nathan Church to the 10-day IL. It’s retroactive to May 21.
Reds third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes was put on the IL with a lumbar bulging disc. That move was retroactive to May 21.
Cubs infielder Matt Shaw was placed on the IL with mid-back tightness. The move is retroactive to May 20.
Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee was placed on the 10-day IL with a mid-back strain. It was made retroactive to May 19.
Right knee inflammation forced Yoan Moncada to the 10-day IL.
Mickey Moniak landed on the injured list with right ankle tendinitis.
The Tigers placed pitcher Burch Smith on the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation.
Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder inflammation) was transferred to the 60-day IL.
Rehab assignments
Giants ace Logan Webb tossed 62 pitches over 3.1 innings for Triple-A Sacramento. Webb struck out two, walked three, and allowed two hits. His velocity was down, as he averaged 91 MPH and topped out at 92 MPH.
Mets pitcher Kodai Senga struck out two and gave up two runs over 3.1 IP (63 pitches) for Low-A St. Lucie. Senga averaged 96 MPH on his four-seamer and topped out at 98 MPH.
Other notes
Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet will throw another bullpen session this weekend, per manager Chad Tracy.
Jackson Merrill (ribs) and Garrett Mitchell (back) were not in their respective teams’ starting lineups.
