Just two weeks after Ryan Waldschmidt received the call to the Majors, another Arizona first-round pick was promoted for the first time on May 23. Tommy Troy, a first-round pick by the Diamondbacks in 2023, was called up after what was a good run in Triple-A Reno.
A Look at Troy
The Arizona Diamondbacks made Tommy Troy, a standout from a deep Stanford Cardinal team — future first-rounders Malcolm Moore & Braden Montgomery, plus Quinn Mathews were on that team — that went to the College World Series in 2023, a first-round pick that year. And since his pro career has started, Troy’s bat has been solid.
No, Troy has not shown the kind of pop that we saw from him in college, where he hit 17 home runs the year he was drafted. However, there is some pop there, as it began to show up in 2025 when Troy hit 15 home runs (12 in Double-A, three in Triple-A) last season.
Troy didn’t have a good 2024 season, as he spent a good chunk of the year on the IL with High-A Hillsboro and posted a sub-.230 average with the Hops. But last season, he hit well in both Double-A and Triple-A.
Across 44 contests, Troy slashed .307/.397/.449 with three home runs and 16 extra-base hits, as well as six stolen bases and 26 walks.
The 24-year-old Troy is not a physically imposing ballplayer at 5’9, but one who can provide a lot of value. It’s a hit-first approach for Troy, who showed some pop (6% Barrel%) in the Minors but also showed a propensity to go with balls the other way and not do too much at the dish. It’s not one of the sexy ways of playing the game — but it’s an effective one.
He won’t swing and miss that much, nor will he expand out of the zone. Troy sported a 19.1% Whiff% on four-seam fastballs last season, demonstrating that hitting velocity won’t be a problem. However, the offspeed & breaking stuff proved to be beat him. His Whiff% off changeups was 42%, and 41% on sweepers and sliders.
Defensively, Troy has largely been a middle infielder throughout his Minor League career. Troy’s still seen a lot of action in the infield, as the 24-year-old played 18 games at second this season. But for the first time in his pro career, he played the outfield, with 18 starts in left & seven in center.
The outfield is a good spot for him, simply because of the speed. And, he’s made some good catches, to say the least.
Arizona officially selected Tommy Troy’s contract on May 23.
Analysis
The Diamondbacks are, for right now, fine in the middle infield with Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo. So for the interim, Troy will likely have to play the role of utilityman for a Diamondbacks team that’s re-configured things in the lineup this season.
More specifically, the D-Backs have made it a priority to get some of the younger hitters looks on the team. Ryan Waldschimdt, a first-round pick in 2024, has been very good as of this writing, as he hit .326 heading into play on May 23. Waldschmidt’s contact ability was a major asset for him in the Minors, and the same can be said for Troy.
And there is room for Troy to stick on Arizona’s roster in the long-term. But for now, the D-Backs will see what they have with the 24-year-old, who had to be protected on the 40-man roster between now and November anyway.
