February 10 was the first official day of 2026 Spring Training, as many teams had pitchers and catchers work out. It also meant injury updates, as the Braves and Mets provided news. Spencer Schwellenbach will begin 2026 on the IL, while Francisco Lindor may need another surgery.
Lindor may need surgery
The Mets’ brass stated that Francisco Lindor will be evaluated on February 11 for a stress reaction in his left hamate bone. It’s possible that Lindor could require surgery, which would require a six-week recovery window.
Lindor had surgery this past offseason, which was his second in three years, and forced him off the 2026 World Baseball Classic for Team Puerto Rico thanks to insurance protections.
Now, a new injury arises, although the Mets are optimistic that Lindor will be ready for Opening Day 2026.
Schwellenbach to miss start of 2026
The Braves placed pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach on the 60-day IL, which will keep him out for at least the first third of the upcoming season. Atlanta’s X account stated that Schwellenbach is dealing with right elbow inflammation.
This is not the first notable issue with Schwellenbach’s elbow. Last season, the Braves lost Schwellenbach in the summer thanks to an elbow fracture. He last pitched in an MLB game on June 28, 2025.
That was part of a very difficult season from an injury perspective for the Braves. Reynaldo Lopez, AJ Smith-Shawver, Grant Holmes, and Chris Sale all missed significant time last season, in addition to Schwellenbach.
Other IL moves
Arizona placed reliever Andrew Saalfrank on the 60-day IL for left labrum repair surgery recovery. As noted on February 9, Saalfrank is done for 2026.
The Red Sox placed Tanner Houck (UCL reconstruction surgery) on the 60-day IL. It was a corresponding move for Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who officially became a Red Sox on February 10.
Kris Bryant (lumbar degenerative disk disease) was placed on the 60-day IL by the Rockies.
