It was a light day across Major League Baseball, one made lighter thanks to the postponement of the Giants/Braves scheduled contest. But there was still some action, including from the Commissioner’s Office.
MLB’s draft proposals
The big news of the day came from the MLB league office, as proposals for international free agency and MLB Draft changes were levied as part of its negotiations with the MLBPA.
MLB indicated its desire to create an international draft, something done in past negotiations but never enacted. Additionally, the league desires to cut the MLB Draft from 20 rounds to 12, eliminating the competitive balance picks, reducing the lottery from top-six to top-four, and raising the minimum age of players eligible for the drafts to 18 (international) and 20 (domestic). This would eliminate high schoolers from the MLB Draft pool.
Currently, players must graduate from high school to first be eligible. Junior and community college players are eligible immediately, while players enrolled in four-year universities become eligible either after their junior year or the year in which one turns 21.
White Sox take final game at Yankee Stadium
Andrew Benintendi broke a 1-1 tie with a grand slam off Camilo Doval to give the White Sox a 5-1 victory over the Yankees.
Ryan Weathers and Sean Burke, the latter of whom tossed 7.1 innings of relief as the bulk man, both struck out eight and pitched well. However, the dagger from Benintendi was the difference.
Colson Montgomery hit his 20th of the season in the second inning.
Vlad Jr. gets on board
For the first time since May 17, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went deep, and that home run mattered in a 4-3 victory for Toronto.
The Jays went out to a three-run lead, highlighted by that home run, an Andres Gimenez single, and a Nathan Lukes home run. However, Boston tied the game at three in the eighth. Brandon Valenzuela‘s RBI double in the ninth inning pushed the Jays up by one.
Trey Yesavage struck out six over 7.1 IP for Toronto.
A’s shut out Angels
The Athletics started their series with the Angels by winning 5-0 in a shutout led by Gage Jump.
Jump struck out seven over seven scoreless innings, another impressive outing for the left-hander. As for the offense, the A’s scored all of their runs in the first. Shea Langeliers hit a three-run home run off Ryan Johnson, and Tyler Soderstrom added his own solo shot. A sac fly from Henry Bolte scored Jacob Wilson to make it a 5-0 game.
