Amidst a very difficult stretch for the Marlins, the club was tasked with defeating the Phillies on July 27. Miami did just that, though, thanks to a ninth-inning comeback against the Phillies’ closer. Plus, the Rangers were able to pick up one more win against the Mariners.
Rangers complete series win
George Kirby surrendered four home runs against the Rangers, who finished up their series with Seattle by winning their third in four games.
Joc Pederson started the day with a solo shot, one of two home runs he hit on the day. Pederson now has 19 home runs on the season. Ezequiel Duran hit his 12th, while Jake Burger tallied his 19th shot of the season.
Starter Kumar Rocker struck out seven over 6.2 IP. He picked up his fourth win of the season.
Randy Arozarena tallied his 13th home run of the year in the Mariners’ 7-3 loss.
Marlins break 12-game losing streak
A Griffin Conine walk-off single snapped the Marlins’ 12-game losing streak, as the Fish won in the first game of their three-game series with the Phillies.
It was an auspicious start for the Marlins, as Bryce Harper hit a two-run shot to give the Phillies an early 2-0 lead in the first. However, the Marlins were able to put five on Zack Wheeler over the first two innings of the contest.
But then, things turned. An Alec Bohm single made it a 5-3 game in the sixth. J.T. Realmuto hit a ground-rule double to cut the Marlins’ lead to one, and then Justin Crawford knocked a two-run single to give the Phillies a lead. A sac fly by J.T. Realmuto in the seventh increased the Phillies’ lead to two.
Jhoan Duran, though, could not hold a two-run lead in the ninth. Heriberto Hernandez, who hit a home run in the first, drove in two to tie it via a single. That came before Conine’s single in the ninth.
Yankees win 60th game
The Yankees won the first game of their one-week stay in Chicago, as New York (AL) won 9-5 over the White Sox.
Chicago jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but the Yankees chipped away. Thanks to Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Spencer Jones, the Yankees scored four in the fourth. The Yanks would score four more in the eighth, highlighted by a three-run shot from catcher Ali Sanchez.
Tigers lose third straight
In a game where neither starter went five, the Orioles scored eight to defeat the Tigers, 8-5. It was the Tigers’ third-straight loss.
The Orioles hit three home runs in Detroit, one from Leody Taveras, one from Coby Mayo, and the other from Tyler O’Neill. That O’Neill home run gave the O’s an 8-5 lead in the sixth, one inning after Baltimore scored three.
Jays win in Scherzer’s return
It was not the cleanest of outings for Max Scherzer, who walked three over 2.2 IP in his return to Washington, D.C. Still, he and six other pitchers combined to help the Blue Jays win 3-2 against the Nationals.
Luis Urias had a home run and two walks, while Myles Straw picked up two hits.
