The Red Sox will head back to Fenway Park with a three-game sweep of the two-time reigning World Series champions in tow. Boston finished that on August 2, part of what was a full day of MLB action on the eve before the Trade Deadline.
Boston sweeps Dodgers
On the day the Dodgers finalized a blockbuster trade, Los Angeles was unable to get past the Red Sox. Boston won 8-4 to complete the three-game sweep of the Dodgers.
Former Boston College pitcher Emmet Sheehan was tagged for three home runs by Boston, one by Wilyer Abreu, one by Masataka Yoshida, and one by Ceddanne Rafaela. Rafaela, now up to 15, hit a home run in his fourth consecutive contest.
Jake Bennett went 5.2 IP for his seventh win of the season.
Tigers win after Skubal trade
Speaking of Tarik Skubal, the Tigers won 11-0 in their first game without the two-time Cy Young Award winner.
Detroit’s offense had 12 hits in Sacramento. Dillon Dingler. Eduardo Valencia, Spencer Torkelson, and Zach McKinstry each had two hits. James Outman hit his fifth home run of the season off outfielder Carlos Cortes, who only allowed one run in one inning of mop-up relief.
Keider Montero tossed six scoreless innings for his eighth win of the year.
The Tigers improved to 54-58 on the year.
Astros pad AL West lead
The Astros picked up 15 hits, four of which came from Yordan Alvarez, in the club’s 7-3 win over the Rangers. Houston completed the sweep to move to 58-55 on the season.
Tied at three entering the bottom of the seventh, Cam Smith hit an RBI single to make it a 4-3 game. Houston tallied three more runs scored that inning.
Peter Lambert, who earned a no-decision, struck out eight on the day.
Yankees take series in Wrigley
Despite a good outing from Colin Rea on August 3, one mistake did him in. The Yankees won 2-1 to complete a series victory in Chicago.
That mistake came in the third, as Jose Caballero hit his 11th home run of the year, a two-run shot that drove in Ryan McMahon. Rea wound up striking out seven over six innings. But those two runs were all the Yankees needed.
Gerrit Cole and three other relievers held the Cubs to one run.
Alcantara wins 12th game of 2026
The Marlins completed their four-game series in Queens with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Mets. Sandy Alcantara led the charge.
Robert Stock received the start on August 3, and the journeyman pitcher did very well. Stock tossed five innings and only allowed one run, which came off a Joe Mack solo home run. But that was all Alcantara and the Marlins needed.
Alcantara tossed six scoreless innings to lower his season ERA to 3.68. He earned his 12th win of the season.
