On a light day in terms of games across MLB — certainly not among trade talks & moves — there were still some major games on the schedule. The Padres & Diamondbacks started a big series, as the two teams fight for a playoff spot. Pittsburgh started a series with division rival Milwaukee. And in Wrigley Field, the Cubs & Dodgers met for the second series of the year.
Three home runs for Burleson
The Yankees and Cardinals combined for 20 total runs and 10 home runs. St. Louis, though, won 13-7 to move to 56-57 on the season.
It was the Alec Burleson show, as the Cardinals’ first baseman hit three home runs off three different pitchers (Cam Schlittler, Tim Hill, Angel Chivilli).
As for the Yankees, Luis Garcia Jr. hit his first as a Yankee in his first game. He was acquired in a big trade with the Nationals one day earlier. Austin Wells, Jose Caballero, Trent Grisham, and Ryan McMahon also hit home runs.
Cubs put up 10 on Dodgers
The Dodgers’ slide continues, as the club lost 10-5 to the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
This game started auspiciously for the Cubs, as Shohei Ohtani and Andy Pages got on to start thanks to singles. Then, Tommy Edman hit a line drive home run to make it a three-run game before Matthew Boyd recorded an out.
But he settled down. The same could not be said for Justin Wrobleski, who allowed seven runs and four home runs. Seiya Suzuki, Carson Kelly, Kevin Alcantara, and Michael Busch all went deep on the lefty.
Pirates take one in Milwaukee
Amidst a blitz to add relief help, the heat is now on the Pirates to come through over these final few weeks. Pittsburgh got their post-deadline stretch off with a win, as the Pirates defeated the Brewers 4-3.
The Pirates got off to a 4-0 lead thanks to a Spencer Horwitz three-run double in the third, plus a Jake Mangum bunt single that added another run. However, Milwaukee was able to get off Bubba Chandler, thanks to a Joey Ortiz RBI single in the fifth & an Andrew Vaughn two-run double one inning later.
However, the Pirates’ bullpen held the game down. Camilo Doval struck out in a scoreless inning, following up after three strikeouts from Gregory Soto over 1.1 IP. Mason Montgomery earned his third save of the season.
Pittsburgh is now 57-57 on the season.
