August 19 was a good day for the Twins. Minnesota moved into a playoff spot after completing a sweep of the Atlanta Braves. Meanwhile, the Brewers, who will play the Braves this coming weekend, fell to the Mariners one day after a mammoth offensive performance.
Braves swept in Minnesota
The Braves’ one-week, four-city road trip did not get off to a good start, as Atlanta lost 6-4 to the Twins, giving Minnesota a three-game sweep.
Former Brave A.J. Minter picked up the win for the Twins. That came after Minter held the game at four after Kody Funderburk and Tommy Nance failed to hold a three-run lead. But in the seventh, Kody Clemens drove in the game-winning run with a single, followed by a Brooks Lee RBI single.
Minnesota moved into the third and final AL Wild Card spot.
Mariners win after historic loss
One night after the Mariners lost 22-0 to the Brewers, Seattle won 7-5 to even the series.
The Mariners’ offense didn’t hit anything particularly hard off Dustin May, although the club almost broke it open when Julio Rodriguez nearly hit a grand slam in the second that could have made it 8-0. Overall, the club had just two extra-base hits in the entire game. Still, Seattle chased May after seven runs allowed in two innings.
Logan Gilbert allowed three runs over five innings and picked up his 10th win of the season.
Phillies win 70th game
Phillies fans saw vintage Aaron Nola on August 19, as he struck out eight and allowed just one run over seven frames. Philadelphia won 4-1 over the Marlins.
It was a good day for several of the Phillies’ hitters. Trea Turner, Garrett Stubbs, and Brandon Marsh each had two hits, as did ex-Marlin Luis Arraez. One of those hits from Arraez was a two-run home run in the third that drove in Bryce Harper.
The lone run for the Marlins came via a Javier Sanoja solo home run.
White Sox win final Crosstown Series game
The White Sox salvaged one game from their three-game series on the North Side, as the road team won 3-0 at Wrigley Field.
Jose Urquidy was the bulk man for the White Sox, and he was excellent. After two shutout innings from Sean Newcomb, Urquidy struck out eight over six scoreless frames. Grant Taylor tossed a scoreless ninth for his seventh save of the season.
Miguel Vargas had two walks and two hits, while Braden Montgomery had two hits plus two RBI.
Astros win Pecko’s debut
The Astros won 3-2 in a game where one of the club’s better pitching prospects made his big-league debut.
It was a mixed bag for Ethan Pecko, who struck out four but walked three over 3.2 IP. Pecko was prone to falling behind in this one, and it didn’t help him that his first career strikeout came via a nine-pitch at-bat against Vaughn Grissom.
However, the Astros’ bullpen was sterling, as it tossed 5.1 IP without being charged with a run.
