On a light day across Major League Baseball on August 27, there was still plenty of action. The Cardinals and Astros both picked up much-needed wins. And in Atlanta, Chris Sale diced up the Dodgers.
Braves win 1-0
The Braves shut out the Dodgers 1-0, thanks in large part to the club’s pitcher/catcher tandem.
Drake Baldwin hit a leadoff home run in the first, all Atlanta would need in this one. Chris Sale struck out 11 in a complete-game shutout. It was the third time that Sale went six-plus innings without allowing an earned run in a start since the All-Star Game break. Plus, his first complete game of 2026.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out eight over 6.1 IP for the Dodgers.
Cardinals get much-needed win
On a bullpen day for the Cardinals, St. Louis finished their series with the Orioles by defeating Baltimore 7-5.
Heading into the seventh inning, the Cardinals had a 6-1 lead. But the Orioles cut that lead down quickly. Coby Mayo hit a three-run shot in the seventh, and a Gunnar Henderson RBI double in the eighth made it a one-run contest. Nathan Church gave the Cardinals some wiggle room with an RBI single in the eighth.
Alec Burleson picked up another RBI on the day, giving him 99 on the year.
Astros get back to .500
Hayden Wesneski struck out six and allowed just one earned run over five innings, as Houston defeated the Yankees 5-1.
Christian Walker had a fine day, as he picked up three hits. One of those was a two-run home run, his 24th overall shot of the season, that also drove in Daulton Varsho to make it 3-0 at the time. Cody Bellinger cut the lead to two in the sixth with a sac fly. But a Jeremy Pena solo home run and a throwing error brought home two more for Houston.
With that loss, the Yankees are two games ahead of the Red Sox in the AL Wild Card race. The two teams will meet this weekend in The Bronx.
