Despite a scare, the Cubs were able to extend their winning streak thanks to an extra-inning victory over the Phillies. On the other side, the Phillies enter a major NL East matchup with the Braves on a nine-game losing streak.
Phillies lose ninth straight
The Cubs defeated the Phillies 8-7 on April 23, which gave Chicago a nine-game winning streak and a share of first place.
Chicago’s offense got to Cristopher Sanchez fast, as the Cubs scored five runs over the first three innings. Michael Busch belted a slider off the left-hander for his second home run of the season in the second inning.
It was Sanchez’s worst start of the 2026 season. Sanchez gave up a season-high 12 hits and six earned runs. It was the first time that he conceded six or more earned runs in a regular-season start since August 25, 2025.
Philadelphia didn’t go quietly. Brandon Marsh hit two home runs, and Adolis Garcia belted a pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning. But one inning later, Dansby Swanson finished the game with a walk-off hit off Tanner Banks.
deGrom excellent
Texas defeated the Pirates 6-1 on April 23, and Jacob deGrom played a big role.
deGrom struck out 10 over 5.2 IP for the Rangers to earn his second victory of the season. His 21 swings-and-misses were most on the day across Major League Baseball.
As for the offense, Brandon Nimmo, Corey Seager, and Evan Carter each had two hits. Carter and Seager hit home runs for the Rangers.
Yankees, Mets win
Both the Yankees and Mets won their games on April 24.
The Yankees swept the Red Sox in Fenway and earned their sixth straight victory. Red Sox pitcher Payton Tolle (40.9% Whiff%) struck out 11 in his first 2026 start, with the lone blemish being a Jazz Chisholm Jr. solo home run.
But in the seventh, Cody Bellinger drove in two on a single to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. Aaron Judge picked up an RBI later on to give New York a 4-2 lead.
As for the Mets, the team won 10-8 over the Twins to take the season series with Minnesota.
Bo Bichette cleared the bases with a double in the eighth to break a 7-7 tie, created by a Ryan Jeffers grand slam in the top half of the frame. Christian Scott, recalled from the Minors, walked five and hit one batter over 1.1 IP.
