It was getaway day for several teams across Major League Baseball, one where some had to delay their trips thanks to doubleheaders. The Phillies and Cardinals were among the big winners on April 30, two teams that enter May on a winning streak.
Doubleheaders galore
Thanks to rain on the East Coast a day earlier, there were two doubleheaders on April 30.
The Orioles & Astros split their two games in Baltimore. Baltimore won the first game 10-3, on the heels of a seven-strikeout performance from Chris Bassitt, plus home runs from Jeremiah Jackson & Adley Rutschman. Jackson ended April with six home runs and 24 RBI.
In the second game, the Astros beat up on the O’s, winning 11-5. Lance McCullers Jr. struck out nine and had 18 swings-and-misses, second-most on the day. Cam Smith & Yordan Alvarez each hit a home run for Houston.
The Phillies, meanwhile, won thanks to two walk-off victories against the Giants. Philadelphia is now on a three-game winning streak.
Tigers beat Braves
One day after the Tigers were victims of a walk-off victory by the Braves, Detroit finished the series with a 5-2 win.
The Tigers fell behind early but came back, as Matt Vierling hit a double in the eighth to score Kerry Carpenter. A sac fly from Gleyber Torres was the game-winning run for the Tigers, who tallied two more runs in the ninth.
Framber Valdez struck out eight and finished the day with 21 swings-and-misses, most on the day across the league.
Cardinals win 4th straight
St. Louis put up 14 hits and seven runs on the Pirates, which gave the Cardinals a victory over the Pirates.
JJ Wetherholt led off the game with a home run, and Jordan Walker belted a two-run home run off a backed-up breaking ball from Paul Skenes later that inning. Skenes struck out nine but ended the day with four earned runs and a loss.
Alec Burleson had three hits and three RBI for St. Louis.
Hunter Dobbins walked five and struck out four over 4.1 innings in his 2026 debut with the Cardinals.
