The penultimate day of April gave us a mostly full slate of MLB contests, as two were rained out on the East Coast. Among the highlights on the 29th included an extra-innings win for the White Sox, plus a blowout victory for the Nationals.
Angels lose again in Chicago
The Angels lost their sixth consecutive game on April 29, as Los Angeles (AL) lost to Chicago thanks to a walk-off single from Colson Montgomery in the tenth inning.
Erick Fedde stymied the Angels for seven innings, as the right-hander struck out six in that span. However, he conceded two home runs, one to Mike Trout and the other to Vaughn Grissom. Not much swing-and-miss from Fedde but he did have 18 called strikes.
Mitch Farris (40% Whiff%) pitched fine in long relief and helped keep the Halos in position to win. But in the ninth inning, a Sam Antonacci triple off Ryan Zeferjahn tied the game for the Sox.
Mets blown out in Queens
The Washington Nationals put up 15 hits and 14 total runs against the Mets on April 29.
Washington entered the fourth with a 2-1 lead over David Peterson. However, things got dicey from there. Joey Wiemer hit a single to put the Nationals up by two, then scored two more, one from a walk and the other by a hit by pitch. Then, a grand slam from Brady House opened the floodgates.
Curtis Mead had four hits, including a home run. Cade Cavalli (35.3% Whiff%) struck out 10 over six innings.
The Mets fell to 10-20 on the season, the worst record in MLB by a game. New York also fell to 11.5 games out of the NL East lead, as the Braves won thanks to a Matt Olson walk-off home run off Kenley Jansen.
Rangers win in Rodriguez’s debut
Nathan Eovaldi and the Rangers won 3-0 over the Yankees on April 29.
The day marked the MLB debut for Yankees rookie pitcher Elmer Rodriguez. Rodriguez threw four scoreless innings to start the game but got in some trouble in the fifth. In total, he gave up four hits, four walks, and two earned runs over four plus innings.
Eovaldi (36.3% CSW%) looked like his old self, as he struck out seven over seven scoreless innings for the Rangers.
Cardinals win third in a row
St. Louis defeated the Pirates 5-4 to lock up their third win in a row. The Cardinals were able to cement the win thanks to rookie Nathan Church, who made a jumping grab to rob Nick Gonzales of an extra-base hit.
Andre Pallante (26.7% Whiff%) struck out six over six innings and only allowed one run. JJ Wetherholt and Ivan Herrera, while Alec Burleson hit his fourth home run of 2026 off Bubba Chandler.
With that win, the Cardinals move to 17-13 and are in a playoff spot after the 30-game marker. Yes, it’s early. However, a good sign for a team that was given new, young talent this season.
