The 2026-27 MLB free agent list is littered with second basemen, many of whom have become household names across the league. However, the individual who tops the list of free agent infielders hasn’t even played a game in the Major Leagues yet.

Best infielders available this winter

  1. Carson Kelly
  2. Ty France
  3. Gleyber Torres
  4. Josh Bell
  5. Jazz Chisholm Jr.
  6. Luis Arraez
  7. Ryan Jeffers
  8. Jake Bauers
  9. Brandon Lowe
  10. Teruaki Sato

Compared to 2025, this year’s crop of free agents doesn’t have the same type of superstar names. Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, and Bo Bichette were all premium names, and all three received large contracts. And among the list of 10 above, France, Torres, Bell, and Arraez were all free agents last winter.

The top name is former NPB Triple Crown winner Teruaki Sato, a superstar slugger who’s in his mid-20s and should do well in free agency. He doesn’t come with the same offensive baggage as Munetaka Murakami and may very well prove to be more versatile defensively compared to both him and Kazuma Okamoto.

Brandon Lowe is one of three players on this list who received a qualifying offer this winter. Lowe fit like a glove with the Pirates last year and is, arguably, the best pure power hitter among second basemen in the league. The big concern with Lowe is health, as he spent a lot of time on the IL during the course of his career.

Jake Bauers is coming off a career season, which was capped off by a World Series title. But how well will Bauers do in free agency? Generally a platoon player for years, Bauers slashed .267/.375/.526 (.901 OPS) and eight home runs in the regular season versus left-handed pitchers. Plus, a big one against Blake Snell in the NLCS.

Ryan Jeffers is the best catcher on the board and a formidable offensive threat. Had Jeffers not suffered a hand fracture in the spring, his numbers could have been very impressive this past season.

After Jeffers, there’s a glut of second basemen. Luis Arraez‘s defensive transformation changed the game, making him one of the most valuable at the position. On the other hand. Jazz Chisholm Jr. had a down 2026 after a 30-30 campaign in 2025.

Gleyber Torres only played 96 games in 2026. Still, the ex-Tiger posted a strong .364 on-base percentage in Detroit this past season.

Josh Bell nearly drove in 100 runs for Minnesota in another under-the-radar campaign for the first baseman. There’s also Ty France, a former Gold Glove winner at first and someone who’s coming off a career year in San Diego.

Carson Kelly, who split time with Miguel Amaya in Chicago over the past few years and hit well with the Cubs, caps off the list.
