Chicago officially moved on from Jameson Taillon on August 2, as the Cubs traded him to a team that the club will see just days after the 2026 Trade Deadline. Plus, the Mets made more moves, and the Royals called up veteran big-league reliever Aaron Bummer.

Cubs trade Taillon to Toronto

The Cubs traded Jameson Taillon to the Blue Jays, along with cash, on August 2 in exchange for a player to be named later.

Taillon was designated for assignment by the Cubs earlier in the week, in a season where little has gone right for the veteran right-hander. He struggled to keep runners off base and also missed time due to injury.

However, he will get a fresh start in Canada, somewhat fitting given he is a dual citizen and pitched for the country in the WBC twice. Plus, the Blue Jays may move starters out before August 3, given that Kevin Gausman is among several starters set to hit free agency after 2026.

Bummer selected by Royals

The Royals selected Aaron Bummer on August 2 and added him to the active roster.

Bummer, who signed with the club on a Minor League pact last month, struck out seven over four scoreless innings with Triple-A Omaha.

Recalls & options

Josh Simpson (Mariners), Brenan Hanifee (Tigers), Duncan Davitt (White Sox). and JR Ritchie (Braves) were recalled from the Minors.

Billy Cook (Pirates), Jack Anderson (Twins), Jonathan Pintaro (Mets), Will Dion (Guardians), and Isaac Mattson (Pirates) were optioned to the Minors.

Other notes

The Mets claimed catcher Shawn Ross on waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bryce Conley & Robert Stock had their contracts selected by the club & added to the big-league active roster. Additionally, relievers Joey Gerber & Kevin Herget were designated for assignment.

San Francisco claimed infielder Buddy Kennedy off waivers from the Mariners.
