St. Louis’ youth movement continued on May 24, as left-handed pitching prospect Brycen Mautz was promoted to join the Cardinals’ rotation. The Guardians, meanwhile, cut rookie Peyton Pallette after he struggled to limit the walks over the course of his two-month-long Major League career.

Mautz recalled by Cardinals

The Cardinals recalled left-hander Brycen Mautz on May 24, setting him up to make his MLB debut and first career big-league start that day. Mautz was a second-round pick in 2022.

A five-pitch pitcher, Mautz topped out at 96 MPH but mostly sat in the low-90s with his four-seamer and sinker. He sported an elevated 5.4 BB/9 rate this season but pitched well aside from that, as Mautz posted a 2.90 ERA and struck out 43 over 40 frames for Triple-A Memphis.

A good amount of swing-and-miss (25.6% Whiff%) on the four-seamer, which doesn’t have a ton of induced ride. Mautz’s two big swing-and-miss offerings were the curveball (35% Whiff%) and slider (41%).

Pallette cut by Guardians

The Guardians designated reliever Peyton Pallette for assignment on May 24.

Pallette was picked by the Guardians in the 2025 Rule 5 Draft, taken from the White Sox organization. The right-hander was well-known for being a power arm but the results were very mixed for him at the MLB level this season. He walked 16 over 20.2 IP with the Guardians this season.

Unless the Guardians & White Sox work out a deal, Pallette will have to be offered back to Chicago.
