Rece Hinds’ complicated tenure with the Reds came to an end on May 21. Hinds, a former second-round pick by the franchise, was traded to the Marlins. Cincinnati received some bullpen help, as former Rule 5 pick Zach McCambley was sent to Ohio by the Marlins.
Hinds traded to Marlins
The Marlins acquired outfielder Rece Hinds from the Reds on May 21 in exchange for Minor League pitcher Zach McCambley.
Hinds, who made his MLB debut two years ago and was DFA’d this month by Cincinnati, has long been known as a power-hitting threat. However, what’s done Hinds in both at the MLB and, to a certain extent, the Minors was a propensity to swing and miss. Last year, he sported a Whiff% of 34% in Triple-A.
This season, Hinds’ walk numbers have spiked. He walked 18 times in 23 contests with the Bats, and still remains a power threat.
McCambley was a 2025 Rule 5 Draft pickby the Phillies. But he didn’t make the team out of camp and was returned to the Marlins. Mid-90s fastball that showed cut and ran up to 97 MPH this season, coupled with a sweeper, a cutter, a sinker, and an occasionally-used changeup.
Hinds was optioned to Triple-A after the move.
Braves claim catcher
The Braves claimed catcher Maverick Handley off waivers from the Orioles.
Handley has just three hits over 48 Major League appearances. However, he’s shown a high pop-time and above-average framing and blocking in his brief MLB career.
The former Oriole joins a depleted catching core in Atlanta, one currently without Sean Murphy and Drake Baldwin.
Recalls & options
Graham Pauley (Marlins) was recalled from Triple-A.
PJ Poulin (Nationals), Victor Mederos (Braves), and Jayden Murray (Astros) were optioned to Triple-A.
Other notes
Atlanta selected Carlos Carrasco from Triple-A, bringing him back to the MLB level.
Orioles pitcher Jose Espada was outrighted to Triple-A Norfolk.
The Astros outrighted pitcher Cody Bolton to Triple-A Sugar Land.
