Luis Torrens has been a valuable piece for the Mets over the last three seasons. And on May 2, the team rewarded the catcher with a multi-year extension to keep him in New York for a little while longer. Plus, the Marlins added another powerful righty to their bullpen on the 2nd.
Mets extend Torrens
The Mets extended catcher Luis Torrens on May 2, a deal that’s for two years. Per reports, it’ll be $11.5MM for the two years.
Torrens is in his third season with the Mets, where he’s worked as both a backup catcher and a starter, thanks to injuries sustained by Francisco Alvarez over the years. Where his value truly shines is behind the plate, as his CS% is over 40% since the start of 2024. Additionally, he rated above-average in blocking and framing.
Ekness called up by Marlins
The Marlins selected the contract & promoted relief pitcher prospect Josh Ekness on May 2.
Ekness, a 24-year-old right-hander, has been one of the better strikeout pitchers in what is a good farm system for Miami, in terms of both starting pitcher & relief prospects. He hit as hard as 99 MPH, and sat 96-98 MPH with both the four-seamer and sinker. Additionally, he has a slider and sweeper.
