Aaron Judge is back for the Yankees but another notable name is headed to the IL for the club. Jazz Chisholm Jr., who left action late on September 8, will be going on the injured list with a thumb sprain.

Chisholm Jr. going on IL

The Yankees are expected to place Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the injured list before the club’s game on the 10th. Shortstop Anthony Volpe is expected to be called up by New York (h/t ESPN).

Manager Aaron Boone indicated that Chisholm Jr. will be shut down for seven to 10 days.

Freeman and Ohtani out

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts relayed news on Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani, both of whom were out of the club’s starting lineup against the Reds.

Freeman is dealing with a right knee injury. However, he is not expected to go on the IL.

As for Ohtani, he was out of the lineup again due to his lingering biceps/knee problems. An injured list is still on the table, per Roberts.

IL moves

Braves pitcher Bryce Elder was placed on the 15-day IL on September 9 thanks to arthroscopic right knee surgery recovery.

Orioles INF/OF Blaze Alexander was placed on the 10-day IL with low back discomfort.

Pete Fairbanks (Marlins), Zac Gallen (Diamondbacks), Michael Soroka (Diamondbacks), and Reynaldo Lopez (Braves) were activated.

Rehab assignments

With the Rockies in New York, Colorado sent Jose Quintana and Kyle Freeland to New Jersey & pitch with Double-A Hartford, as the Yard Goats were in Somerset taking on New York’s Minor League team. Quintana struck out one over two innings (35 pitches), while Freeland struck out five over three scoreless frames (47 pitches).

Also in that game, Clarke Schmidt struck out two over a scoreless inning.

Blue Jays OF/DH Anthony Santander went 0-for-4 with a strikeout for Triple-A Buffalo. Santander was the designated hitter for the Bisons.

Dodgers pitcher Gavin Stone struck out two over 0.2 IP for Triple-A Oklahoma City. However, he walked two, allowed two hits (one home run), and charged with three runs.

Twins outfielder Austin Martin went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI for Triple-A St. Paul.

Royals pitcher James McArthur allowed three hits and three earned runs over 0.2 IP for Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Other notes

Red Sox catcher Adley Rutschman (elbow) is expected back on September 11 against the Royals, per manager Chad Tracy. Rutschman recently had a cortisone injection.

Mets infielder Brett Baty left with a knee injury.

Corbin Carroll (back), Jake Bauers (shin), and Jac Caglianone (elbow) were out of their respective lineups.
