While the National Football League and its players have fought over artificial turf playing surfaces, there hasn’t been much of that across Major League Baseball. That’s because many teams utilize a natural grass playing surface for their stadiums. However, a select few use artificial turf.

It shouldn’t be a shock that all of the teams that have artificial turf play in a stadium that has either a retractable or permanent roof structure. After all, it can be difficult for grass to grow when a roof is covering it.

Playing surfaces have evolved over the years. The Astros became the first Major League team in history to add artificial turf, using what’s known as AstroTurf, after the original playing surface died and needed to be replaced in the Astrodome.

Oddly enough, the Astros’ current home, Daikin Park, does not use artificial turf.

As of 2025, the Blue Jays are the only team to use a variant of AstroTurf.

The Twins had an artificial turf surface in the Metrodome before moving to open-air Target Field, which has a natural grass field.

Four Major League teams — the Diamondbacks, Marlins, Rangers, and Rays — use Shaw Sports Turf. Shaw’s turf has not gone without some controversy. Back in 2019, Ketel Marte blamed the turf for a back injury.

However, the vast majority of Major League teams — as can be seen in the table above — don’t have artificial turf. Many of the league’s teams, including the Red Sox, Guardians, Mets, and Yankees, among others, use Kentucky Bluegrass.

Many of the California teams, including the Angels, Dodgers, and Padres, use a type of Bermuda Grass on their field surfaces.
