Arizona, looking to make it back to the playoffs for the first time in three years, got their ace back on September 8. Corbin Burnes made an impact in his return to the Majors. As for his old team, the Brewers, Milwaukee continued their torrid pace with a theatrical victory over the Cubs.
Brewers pull off wild comeback
The Brewers became the first team in the Majors to get to 90 wins, thanks to a wild 4-3 extra-innings win against the Cubs.
Chicago’s pitching staff matched Jacob Misiorowski and the Brewers through eight. In the ninth inning, Carson Kelly hit a two-run double to make it 3-1. But in the bottom half, Jacob Webb allowed a two-run shot to Jackson Chourio, tying the game with two outs.
With the bases loaded in the 10th, Luis Lara golfed a single to left off Caleb Thielbar to win it.
Arizona defeat Royals again
For the first time since June 2025, Corbin Burnes was on a big-league mound. Despite struggling to grind through at-bats, Burnes wound up striking out two over three scoreless innings.
Yet again, this one went to extras. John Rave tied it with a two-run shot in the ninth. Both teams traded runs in the 10th inning. In the 11th inning, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. tripled to score Ildemaro Vargas. A Ketel Marte sac fly scored Gurriel Jr., giving Arizona enough to win 5-3.
Padres rally late
The Padres scored four in the eighth to defeat the Nationals 5-4. That win helped San Diego keep pace with the Diamondbacks.
Down 4-1, Austin Hays got one back with a sac fly. Manny Machado tied the contest with a two-run single. Luis Campusano drove in Machado later in the eighth inning to give the Padres a 5-4 lead that would not be relinquished.
David Morgan picked up his third save.
Astros take down Phillies
In a rematch of the 2022 World Series, the Astros took the first game of their series with the Phillies 6-5.
Despite a six-strikeout night, Andrew Painter allowed six earned runs and 10 hits. Christian Walker hit a three-run home run off Painter in the second, while Cam Smith got him for a solo shot in the fourth. Daulton Varsho hit his 11th home run of the season off Brooks Raley.
Trea Turner had two hits, one of which was his 18th home run of the year.
Guardians hold on to WC spot
The Guardians won 9-5 to hold on to the third AL Wild Card spot, defeating the Orioles.
Tanner Bibee couldn’t make it through five, as the right-hander allowed five earned runs over 4.1 IP. However, Cleveland’s offense came through in spades. Travis Bazzana hit a three-run home run off Brandon Young in the second. The Guardians received eight hits, two each, from the bottom four (Angel Martinez, Patrick Bailey, Petey Halpin, Brayan Rocchio) of the lineup.
Pete Alonso had two hits for the O’s, one of which was his 34th home run of the season.
