With the postseason roster deadline looming, the Orioles grabbed Luis Robert Jr. off waivers from the Mets, per reports. The move clears money off the Mets’ books, while it gives the Orioles a good right-handed bat with pop, plus someone who can hold his own and then some in center field.
A Look at Robert Jr.
The Mets traded for Luis Robert Jr. this past January amidst a push to quickly add punch to their offense after losing out on Cody Bellinger & Kyle Tucker. At the time, it was a low-risk move. Robert Jr. was coming off another injury-riddled campaign, and the Mets only surrended Luisangel Acuna and prospect Truman Pauley to get the outfielder.
Unfortunately, the 2026 season wasn’t a healthy one again for the former All-Star. Robert Jr. missed months with a herniated disc. That limited him to 58 games this season.
But throughout August, Robert Jr. has been very productive for the Mets, a team that’s gotten healthier offensively and more balanced with A.J. Ewing and Carson Benge finding their groove at the big-league level. Through 24 contests, Robert Jr. slashed .267/.321/.520 with six home runs and seven total extra-base hits.
Look, at this point, the book is well-known regarding Robert Jr. A strong outfielder with pop and speed, his tools are among the best in the league when he’s healthy. But that’s been far from a given throughout the course of his Major League career.
The other issue with Robert Jr. is that he’s not a pace-setter, by any stretch of the imagination. He’s an aggressive hitter who regularly expands outside of the strike zone. That was true again in 2026, although his metrics in that regard were better in August.
He’s a good supplementary piece who can keep the line moving, especially when Robert Jr. has protection. With the White Sox last season, and the Mets in 2026, his offensive numbers bumped up significantly when surrounded by other hitters who can do damage.
With the claim, the Orioles are on the hook for the remainder of Luis Robert Jr.’s 2026 salary, which is a shade above $3MM. Additionally, Robert Jr.’s contract comes with a club option for 2027, $20MM with a $2MM buyout.
Analysis
For the Mets, the club clears a little over $5MM off the books, which is the clear benefit of this move.
Robert Jr. hit well over his final four weeks with the Mets. But with the emergence of Ewing as the clear everyday center fielder, there just wasn’t a long-term fit for Robert Jr. Assuming no injuries for 2027, an outfielder of Juan Soto, Ewing, and Carson Benge is more or less set.
The Orioles, meanwhile, are in the midst of a playoff push. At 68-69, the Orioles are nipping at the heels of the Cleveland Guardians, who were 69-68 as of August 31. And on paper, Robert Jr. is a good addition for a club that hasn’t received incredible contributions from the outfield core.
Colton Cowser came into play with a .700 OPS, while Dylan Beavers was a shade over that figure. Tyler O’Neill is on the IL, and the O’s have also experimented with rookie Christian Franklin in the outfield.
On a team that has some formidable hitters in the middle of the lineup, Robert Jr. could be a nice fit here. Additionally, he’s also someone who could be a fit on the club for the 2027 campaign.
