Last winter was an interesting one for the Marlins. Miami did spend to add a high-leverage reliever, even though that move had mixed results. The club also moved young pitchers for more position player assets, moves that have yielded results to this point. It’s been a good past two seasons for the Marlins — but what would logically make sense to add for 2027?

Biggest needs for Marlins

Realistically speaking, the Marlins likely won’t be significant buyers this winter.

For one, past precedent indicates that. But second, the Marlins are set fairly well, as far as constructing their lineup and rotation for 2027.

Joe Mack & Agustin Ramirez are the two catchers, as of now. Kyle Stowers, Xavier Edwards, Otto Lopez, and Javier Sanoja should all see a lot of playing time in the infield next season. And for the outfield, Jakob Marsee and Owen Caissie are controllable assets. Griffin Conine, Heriberto Hernandez, and Esteury Ruiz should also be worked in fairly regularly, too.

As for the pitching staff, the Marlins have a formidable trio of Sandy Alcantara (assuming he is not traded), Eury Perez, and Max Meyer. Plus, depth starting pitchers. Tyler Phillips and Janson Junk are there, too.

The bullpen also has many options, including Calvin Faucher, Josh Ekness, William Kempner, Victor Vodnik, and Michael Petersen.

Who will close next season is going to be an interesting storyline to watch. Pete Fairbanks wasn’t as sharp as in past seasons and ultimately went down with a season-ending thoracic outlet syndrome.

He was the closer for much of 2026, and the club was creative in filling that role. Alcantara was used in several save situations last year, not just to lock down games but also to work him in while keeping his innings down late in the season.

Realistically, bullpen help would be an obvious focal point, although that could be said for many teams throughout the Majors.

Aside from the bullpen, it’s hard to anticipate big moves, even though the Marlins have knocked on the playoff door each of the last two seasons. For Miami, it’s been about building from the ground up via trades & player development.
