The Rockies added a sparkplug to the active roster on June 9, as infielder/outfielder Cole Carrigg was promoted to the club’s Major League roster. It also comes after Carrigg ran through the Pacific Coast League, where he was first in stolen bases and third in total hits.

A Look at Carrigg

Colorado selected Cole Carrigg with the 65th pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of San Diego State University. It was an interesting college career for Carrigg, who hit .388 on an 18-38 Aztecs team that starred two Major Leaguers (himself & Troy Melton). However, he hit .302 in his junior season — although his other underlying numbers weren’t terrible.

Carrigg only hit seven home runs in his collegiate career but he lapped that figure in 2024, as he hit 16 home runs and 43 extra-base hits with High-A Spokane. That pushed his prospect stock in a significant way. However, last season, Carrigg slashed .237/.316/.394 in 2025 with Double-A Hartford. And, there were many more strikeouts.

We documented Carrigg’s struggles at the plate this past winter, as the numbers painted a pretty picture of what kind of hitter he actually is. Lots of swing-and-miss, and an aggressive approach that saw him take few pitches.

But this season, Carrigg has been a highly productive hitter with Triple-A Alburquerque. Carrigg slashed .338/.414/.529 with six home runs and 26 extra-base hits, plus 30 stolen bases in the regular season.

Carrigg’s speed is a premier asset. He stole 53 bases two seasons ago, nearly hit that marker last season, and that kind of stolen-base threat can impact the games in several ways. However, as with many other speedsters who’ve made it to the Majors in recent years (A.J. Ewing, Chandler Simpson), it’s much harder to take liberties on MLB catchers.

As far as his approach is concerned, Carrigg is a switch-hitter whose swing can be all over the place. He showed the ability to drop the head & belt pitches in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. On some occasions, though, the mechanics weren’t exactly the same. And, he likes to stay more open when batting from the left side, and even & upright on the right side.

The good news is that the swing-and-miss wasn’t much of a problem in Triple-A. That was reflected both in the raw totals & his strikeout numbers, as he was punched out just 39 times in 57 contests with the Isotopes. Last year with Hartford, Carrigg struck out 145 times over 123 games.

Carrigg raised his take rate to 51% this season in Triple-A, and not only that, most of his takes wound up being balls. The chase rate was 29.6% since May 1, high but not excessive.

Defensively, Carrigg played at both short & center, not surprising given the speed that he possesses.

The Rockies officially selected Cole Carrigg’s contract on June 9.

Analysis

Colorado currently has three outfielders on the IL, as Mickey Moniak, Brenton Doyle, and Jordan Beck are all out. And on the 9th. utilityman Tyler Freeman went on the injured list with a concussion.

There’s ample opportunity for Carrigg, who profiles as a sparkplug who showed some pop, but on top of that, also impacts the game in several ways.

And like several other 2023 MLB Draft picks, Carrigg was added to the Rockies’ 40-man roster months before Colorado had to add him to avoid him being lost to the Rule 5 Draft.
