In a year where the White Sox have defied expectations, the club added another piece to fill out the outfield. That would be Brenton Doyle, the former Gold Glove winner who came over from the Colorado Rockies in a three-player trade.

The White Sox’s Return

• OF Brenton Doyle (.214/.287/.282, one HR & six XBH over 45 GP)

It’s hard to get better as far as defensive center fielders than Brenton Doyle. A multi-time Gold Glove winner in the outfield, Doyle possesses top-flight speed & range in the outfield, perfect as far as “run prevention” is concerned (I use it in quotes, simply because it’s a phrase uttered quite often).

Doyle had a tremendous 2024 season, one where he hit 23 home runs and stole 30 bases for the Rockies. And despite swing-and-miss concerns, Doyle looked like a keeper & building block.

But last season, Doyle hit just 15 home runs over 138 contests. And this year, he’s missed most of 2026 due to injury. He just returned from the IL on July 31.

Power & speed are the calling cards. However, it’s all about how much contact he can make.

Doyle has three more years of team control.

The Rockies’ Return

• SP Mason Adams (3.86 ERA, 48 K over 49 IP (ROK, A+, AAA))
• INF Carlos Vielma (.337/.507/.474, one HR & nine XBH over 34 GP (DSL))

Mason Adams is the main piece in this trade. A 26-year-old right-hander who pounded the strike zone and walked very few batters in 2023 and 2024, his BB/9 rate spiked to 3.5 this season across four levels. However, the 2022 draft pick, who missed all of 2025, did a very good job of limiting well-hit contact and the home run ball throughout his Minor League career.

And this season in Triple-A, just four batted balls considered barrels were surrendered by Adams. Two of those came off the sweeper.

Opposing batters have a hard time squaring up his fastball. Low-90s pitch that topped out at 95 MPH. He’ll pair that with a sinker used regularly, along with a changeup, a cutter, as well as two breaking balls (curveball & sweeper) that get swing-and-miss.

The other piece to this deal is 16-year-old Carlos Vielma. Vielma had a fantastic season in the DSL, as he was 10th in the circuit with a .507 on-base percentage. He walked 32 times over 34 games with the White Sox’s DSL affiliate.

Analysis

The White Sox continue to buy, as Doyle marks the latest addition for a club that also brought in Luis Castillo & Huascar Brazoban before the deadline.

Doyle, as noted above, is a player who’s good when on — but also has his flaws. But there’s a ton of upside here, especially when taking into account that he can help out a White Sox that hasn’t received great results from Everson Pereira this season. Plus, Tristan Peters, a 2026 AL All-Star, has been on a cold streak.

It’s also worth mentioning that Doyle is a right-handed bat.

As for the Rockies, Colorado picks up a starting pitcher who could fit in Coors Field about as well as one could hope. Deep pitch mix, a sinker to induce ground balls. Plus, the Rockies also had some outfield depth to spare, given that Cole Carrigg is now a Major Leaguer.
