When MLB The Show 25 was released, the new Nintendo Switch 2 console had yet to be released. That changed in June 2025 when the console was launched to the masses. Now that 2026 is here and MLB The Show 26 is on the horizon, will this year’s game be on the Switch 2? Yes and no.
Status of MLB The Show 26 for Switch 2
Sony will release a Nintendo Switch version of MLB The Show 26, which will be playable on the Switch 2. However, a specific version of the game for the latter will not be released.
This tracks with how things worked for MLB The Show 25. Even though an official version for the Switch 2 was never released, the game was still playable on the new hardware thanks to backwards compatibility.
Gaming developers have handled the Switch 2 interestingly, to say the least. For example, Pokémon Legends Z-A was released for both the Switch and the Switch 2. The latter version came with both the Switch version & an upgrade pack for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Now, as far as sports games are concerned, Madden NFL 26 was released this year for the Nintendo Switch 2. Madden games were not released for the Nintendo Switch but that stance changed when Nintendo released the new console with better overall hardware.
A Nintendo Switch & a Nintendo Switch 2 version were released for NBA 2K26, a franchise that traditionally released a game for the former on a regular basis before the latter launched.
2K also released a Nintendo Switch 2 version for WWE 2K25.
EA Sports NHL has not seen a release for either the Nintendo Switch or the Switch 2.
This news comes on the heels of what was reportedly a difficult development landscape, as far as the Nintendo Switch 2 was concerned. Last year, there were reports that developers were having trouble receiving devkits for the new console.
MLB The Show games have been released for the Nintendo Switch since 2022, so the tradition of that will continue. However, those expecting an optimized version of the new game may have to wait until the future.
