The Astros’ 2023 season ended at the hands of in-state rival Texas in the ALCS. Despite the loss, the 2022 World Series champions are poised to make yet another deep run — and Houston has a dominant reliever for the 2024 season. Here’s our 2023-24 Astros offseason recap.

Notable Additions

After losing to the Rangers in the ALCS, Houston lost several key relievers to free agency. And with a need for a left-hander, the Astros added arguably the best reliever on the marker.

Ex-Padres closer Josh Hader joined the Astros on a multi-year deal this winter, after what was a very strong rebound season in San Diego last year. Hader is set to take over the closer’s job in 2024.

Additionally, Houston added Victor Caratini to tandem with likely 2024 starter Yainer Diaz.

Now, a look at the subtractions part of our Astros offseason recap.

Notable Subtractions

As mentioned previously, Houston lost several key relievers, including two guys who can get lefties out.

Hector Neris went to the Cubs, while Ryne Stanek remains on the market as of March 1. Phil Maton went to Tampa Bay.

What to Expect in 2024

The Astros have a strong group already in Houston. With Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman, and Yordan Alvarez all signed through 2024 and Jose Altuve recently extended, Houston’s got the team to make it back to the Fall Classic.

What happens after 2024, though, will be interesting. Bregman will be a free agent after 2024, meaning he could join George Springer and Carlos Correa as key pieces to leave the franchise.
