Yankees reliever Clay Holmes has been on shaky grounds for much of 2024, particularly over the last eight weeks. From July 14-September 5, Holmes owned a 4.32 ERA and blew eight saves for New York (AL). Holmes’ struggles prompted the Yankees to pull Holmes from his role and ex-starter Luke Weaver notched his first save of the season on September 6.

Weaver (3.28 ERA, 81 K over 74 IP) has been excellent as a reliever for the Yankees. He’s simplified his arsenal by going with three main pitches, and his WHIP as of September 6 sat at 0.97 ERA.

A few other important notes. The Rays have been using Edwin Uceta more frequently in high-leverage spots. But, Uceta’s appeared quite often in non-save situations. Thus, it’s a true closer-by-committee with Pete Fairbanks on the IL. The White Sox’s closer situation is also murky but for different reasons.

Lastly, the Tigers. Tyler Holton has been superb for the Tigers this season and has seven saves this season. However, Detroit often uses Holton as an opener. The lefty’s started six times out of the pen since the All-Star break.

Now, off to the NL portion of our 2024 fantasy baseball closers chart.

National League

There have been some changes in the Senior Circuit. The Cubs cut tied with Hector Neris and Jorge Lopez, who got looks in the ninth inning with Chicago (NL), is on the IL. That’s paved the way for young fireballer Porter Hodge, who could be the Cubs closer come Opening Day 2025.

Meanwhile, in Colorado, Victor Vodnik is on the IL. Thus, Tyler Kinley is the main option for saves in the Rocky Mountains.

Lastly, David Bednar was pulled from the closer’s role in Pittsburgh amidst prolonged struggles on the mound. Aroldis Chapman has notched two saves since August 30.
