There are just four weeks in the 2025 fantasy baseball season. For those who are in tight races and need some reinforcements, here’s a look at five hitters to look at as we head into Week 22 of the year.
Best Week 22 hitters to target
- 2B/3B/SS/OF Tommy Edman (Dodgers)
- 2B Andres Gimenez (Blue Jays)
- 3B Josh Jung (Rangers)
- OF Lars Nootbaar (Cardinals)
- OF Matt Wallner (Twins)
We’ll start with Tommy Edman, who took live at-bats this week as he recovers from an ankle injury.
Taking on risk isn’t ideal over the final month but Edman, who’s hitting just .228, is worth it for several reasons. One, he can play multiple positions, which is valuable for a bench piece. Two, Edman did hit better (.263 AVG, .721 OPS) in the second half before suffering a sprained ankle in early August.
I’ll stick with the infielders and move on to Andres Gimenez, who hit two home runs over the last week.
Gimenez has dealt with streakiness this season. But, between his ability to steal bases and hit when he’s hot, Gimenez isn’t the worst option for those in need of infield help.
The last infielder on our Week 22 list is Josh Jung, who tied with Pete Alonso for the most hits (13) over the last week. Jung capped off a good August with a home run on the 31st, which put his slash line for the month at .296/.329/.481 (.810 OPS) with three home runs and 13 RBI.
Next up are the outfielders, starting with Matt Wallner.
Wallner’s strikeout problems have limited his fantasy ceiling in recent years, despite plus power. That was somewhat on display this past week, as Wallner struck out eight times in the last week. However, he stole three bases and hit three home runs.
Those three stolen bases were his first of 2025, which, oddly enough, tied his single-season high. Don’t expect stolen bases from him. But despite the swing-and-miss trouble, Wallner has 20 home runs on the year.
For those who are looking for runs scored, Lars Nootbaar notched four of them and also picked up seven hits over the last week.
Overview of Week 21
Our Week 21 picks, overall, did just fine over the last week.
I hope you scooped up Mark Vientos, who blasted three more home runs and drove in 10 over the last week. Vientos ended his torrid August with a .278 AVG, eight home runs, and 22 RBI, all of which were monthly highs for him this year.
Kyle Teel picked up six hits, while Ryan O’Hearn picked up seven.
Colton Cowser struck out 15 times over seven games. Not ideal.
