Several former All-Stars hit the injured list on April 21. Second baseman Luis Arraez was placed on the concussion injured list, while a simple catch caused Spencer Strider go back on the 15-day IL after only one start.
Arraez on 7-day IL
The Padres dodged a major bullet on April 20 when Luis Arraez left the hospital with no major injury after a collision at first base. However, the news got dampered on the 21st, as Luis Arraez was placed on the 7-day IL.
Arraez was diagnosed with concussion symptoms. San Diego recalled infielder Mason McCoy from El Paso (AAA) to take his roster spot in the interim.
Strider hurt playing catch
Yes, you read that correctly. Spencer Strider was placed on the 15-day injured list after sustaining a hamstring injury while playing catch before the Braves’ game on April 21. He informed the team he wouldn’t be able to make his next scheduled start.
The news comes days after Strider officially ended his rehab assignment and pitched well in his 2025 debut. Strider struck out five over five against the Blue Jays last week.
However, given the dramatics surrounding Ronald Acuna Jr., plus the Braves’ slow start, perhaps this isn’t the most dramatic turn taken in Atlanta this season.
Update on Scherzer
After two cortizone shots in separate thumb joints, Max Scherzer threw from flat ground in Houston on April 21. It was a positive step for Scherzer, who said he could grip the ball better and that his thumb felt better.
However, there’s no timetable on Scherzer’s return.
Other injury news
Miami placed catcher Rob Brantly on the 10-day IL with a right lat strain. It was — in a sense — a corresponding move to clear a 26-man roster spot for catcher Agustin Ramirez. Ramirez was promoted on April 21.
Milwaukee transferred Nestor Cortes from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL. Cortes is recovering from a left elbow flexor strain. Additionally, the Brewers confirmed Tobias Myers will return from the injured list on April 24.
Red Sox starter Brayan Bello will return from the injured list and start for Boston on April 22.
The White Sox transferred Martin Perez, dealing with elbow inflammation, from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL. It served as a move to clear space for Bobby Dalbec, promoted to Chicago to replace Chase Meidroth. Meidroth was placed on the injured list on April 21 with right thumb inflammation.
