The AL Central dominated the injury news on May 17. Byron Buxton was placed on the injured list two days after his collision with teammate Carlos Correa. Meanwhile, in Kansas City, the Royals lost two key pieces in their rotation.
Twins place Buxton on IL
One day after the Twins placed Carlos Correa on the injured list, Byron Buxton landed on the 7-day IL with concussion symptoms. Outfielder Carson McCusker, who’s been on a tear with St. Paul (AAA), will join the Twins on May 18.
Buxton hadn’t been officially removed from that protocol, even though he wasn’t placed on the injured list until the 17th.
Double whammy for the Royals
The Royals lost two notable starters to the injured list. Seth Lugo (finger) and Cole Ragans (groin) were placed there today, with Lugo being added retroactive to May 14.
Lugo was not scheduled to start on the 17th, as the Royals were promoting Noah Cameron to take his spot because of that finger injury. Ragans, meanwhile, re-aggravated the groin injury that took him out of the rotation late last month for one start.
Aside from one missed start thanks to the aforementioned groin injury, Cole Ragans and every regular member of the Royals’ rotation made nine starts this season.
Rehab assignments
Rhett Lowder didn’t last an inning during his rehab start with Louisville (AAA) on May 18. Lowder gave up four earned runs, as well as four hits and a walk against Indianapolis. He conceded a first-inning home run to Jack Suwinski.
Ronald Acuna Jr. spent the game on May 17 as the DH for Gwinnett (AAA). He went 1-1 with four walks. His lone hit was a home run of White Sox prospect Tyler Schweitzer.
Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, out with a groin strain, was back playing with Rancho Cucamonga (A) less than two weeks after he landed on the injured list. Hernandez went 0-1 with two walks and played right field.
Hernandez came out after the fourth inning.
Other injury news
Blake Snell was transferred to the 60-day IL. He hasn’t pitched since early April and won’t be available until early June.
The White Sox placed lefty Tyler Gilbert on the injured list with a sprained MCL.
Mets infielder Ronny Mauricio, who missed all of 2024, was activated from the 10-day IL and immediately optioned to Syracuse (AAA).
