It’s been a busy weekend on the injury front and that continued on May 25. Michael King, one of the best pitchers so far this season, landed on the injured list one day after missing a scheduled start. Meanwhile, Shohei Ohtani took another step forward in his rehab from Tommy John.
King on IL
The Padres placed starter Michael King on the 15-day IL, retroactive to May 22. King is dealing with right shoulder inflammation.
King’s been off to a great start in 2025, with 64 strikeouts over 55.2 IP. However, he was scratched from his scheduled start on the 24th with shoulder soreness.
Contreras hoping to come back on Monday
Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras missed all of St. Louis’ games with the Diamondbacks this past weekend. However, he is hoping to come back on the 26th against the Orioles.
Contreras took batting practice on May 25.
Ohtani tosses live BP
In a hotly anticipated live BP session, Shohei Ohtani tossed 22 pitches against two of the Dodgers’ hitters on May 25.
Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior stated he was sitting in the mid-90s with his fastball.
Rehab assignments
Reds first baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand got three at-bats in with the Bats (AAA) on May 25. Encarnacion-Strand, the DH for Louisville, didn’t play the whole game but went 1-3 with a walk and run scored. Jacob Hurtubise pinch ran for him in the eighth inning.
Royals pitcher Kyle Wright threw two scoreless innings on May 25. Wright, shut down earlier in the month with shoulder fatigue, threw 13 pitches — all of which were strikes.
Other injury news
The Rangers placed Joc Pederson on the 10-day IL with a hand fracture, paving the way for prospect Alejandro Osuna to move up to the Majors.
Toronto placed catcher Tyler Heineman on the 7-day IL with a concussion, retroactive to May 23.
Brandon Nimmo sat out his second straight game on May 25 with a neck injury.
