Drama’s been the story in Boston over the last few days, thanks to comments made by Rafael Devers and the discourse afterwards. The Red Sox are now down another first baseman, as Romy Gonzalez landed on the injured list.
Gonzalez hits IL
The Red Sox are thin at first base at the moment. Boston got thinner on May 10, as Romy Gonzalez was placed on the injured list with a left quad contusion.
Gonzalez was splitting time at first base with Abraham Toro, as Triston Casas is done for the rest of this season. Nick Sogard was recalled from Triple-A and will be in the first base conversation, per manager Alex Cora.
However, it’s not known whether Rafael Devers will get work at first base. Devers was vocal about not moving to first earlier this week, and Cora stated it’s a conversation the team will continue to have.
Altuve leaves game on May 10
The Astros removed Jose Altuve from the game on May 10. Brendan Rodgers pinch hit for him in the third inning and subsequently took over at second base.
Houston stated Altuve was removed with hamstring tightness.
Fraley on IL
One day after the Reds got Austin Hays back, Jake Fraley landed on the injured list. Fraley was placed on the IL with left calf tenderness. He hasn’t played a game since May 6.
Connor Joe, acquired on May 9 from the Padres, was activated and replaced Fraley on the active roster.
Rehab assignments
Brewers pitcher Aaron Ashby threw two innings for Nashville (AAA) as part of his rehab assignment. Ashby maxed at 96 MPH with his two-seamer.
White Sox outfielder Mike Tauchman went 1-3 with a walk for Charlotte (AAA).
Colorado had three rehabbing players in Albuquerque (AAA). Ezequiel Tovar went 0-4, while Tyler Freeman and Aaron Schunk went 1-3. None of the three played all nine innings.
And in related news, Yu Darvish threw a 48-pitch simulated game on May 8. Darvish has yet to pitch in the Majors this season.
Other injury news
Anthony Santander missed his second consecutive game on May 10 with a shoulder injury.
Ian Happ missed the Cubs’ win on May 10 with oblique discomfort. Additionally, the Cubs moved Eli Morgan from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.
