The Astros will have to wait a little bit longer for Yordan Alvarez. Alvarez, out with hand inflammation, is dealing with a fracture in his hand, recently discovered and one that’ll delay his return from the IL. It’s one of several injury updates from May 31.
Alvarez has hand fracture
Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez swung on May 30 as he attempted to complete his comeback from hand inflammation. However, Alvarez felt pain and further examination found a small fracture, one that’s mostly healed per the team.
The team’s general manager, Dana Brown, said that the initial fracture wasn’t likely caught because of too much inflammation and fluid in the hand.
Alvarez was expected to be ready this weekend if he was able to swing pain-free. Instead, he’ll now rest and stop swinging for the interim.
Updates on Dodgers’ injuries
Mookie Betts‘ X-ray on his foot came back, which revealed a fractured toe. Betts didn’t suit up on the 31st but is hoping to come back on June 2, in time for the start of the Dodgers’ series against the Mets.
Los Angeles transferred Tyler Glasnow, recovering from shoulder inflammation, to the 60-day IL.
There was some good news today, as Shohei Ohtani faced live batters again. Ohtani threw 29 pitches during the session, which saw him facing hitters from the Dodgers’ Low-A affiliate.
Rehab assignments
Guardians pitcher Shane Bieber began the clock on his rehab assignment, as the righty made his first start of 2025 in the ACL. Bieber struck out five over 2.1 IP.
Meanwhile, in Double-A, Cole Ragans made a rehab start with Northwest Arkansas (AA) on May 31. Ragans struck out six over 3.2 IP for the Naturals. However, he gave up seven hitters — most were singles but there was a double and home run in there — against the Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate.
And for an additional note on yesterday, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Alex Cobb is “battling” a lot amidst his rehab from an injury. Cobb tossed two scoreless innings and the stuff, per Hinch, was good.
Other injury news
