On a light day of action, there wasn’t much injury news on June 16. However, there were some notes. The surging Orioles had to place one of their rookie starters on the injured list with a hip injury. Meanwhile, in New York, the Yankees will be officially without reliever Jake Cousins for the rest of 2025, as he’ll need season-ending elbow surgery.

Orioles lose another starter

Add another name to the list of injured Orioles starters.

Baltimore placed Cade Povich on the injured list with hip inflammation. Povich joins a lengthy list that includes Kyle Bradish, Grayson Rodriguez, and Tyler Wells as injured starters.

The good news is that manager Tony Mansolino stated Povich shouldn’t be out long.

Cousins done for 2025

Yankees reliever Jake Cousins is officially done for 2025.

Cousins, who’s been on the IL all year along, will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of the 2025 campaign, plus at least a healthy chunk of 2026.

The 30-year-old struck out 53 over 38 innings last year.

McCullers Jr. on IL

Houston placed pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. on the IL with a right foot sprain. It’s retroactive to June 13, 2025.

The injury comes at a tough time for McCullers Jr., as the right-hander did very well in June to this point. He struck out 13 over 11 innings across two starts in June.

No timetable for a return was given by the team.

Other injury news

As expected, Logan Gilbert was activated on June 16 to start against the Red Sox.

Gilbert was one of several players to come off the injured list. Nacho Alvarez Jr. (Braves), Dauri Moreta (Pirates), and J.T. Ginn (Athletics) were also activated off the IL.

Padres starter Yu Darvish (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day IL.
