Both the Blue Jays & Mets placed injured starters on the IL on June 17. However, Toronto fans received some good news, as Max Scherzer may return to the big league roster before the end of the month.
Megill becomes latest Met on IL
For the second time in a week, the Mets lost a starter to the injured list.
The Mets placed Tylor Megill on the 15-day IL with an elbow strain. Reliever Justin Garza was recalled as a corresponding move.
An MRI revealed no structural damage to Megill’s elbow. However, manager Carlos Mendoza said that his elbow has significant joint inflammation.
The best-case scenario, per the team, is that Megill misses four to five weeks. That would put him to return just before the 2025 trade deadline.
Megill joins Kodai Senga, placed on the IL, as pitchers on the shelf for the Mets.
Updates on Blue Jays’ pitchers
After what’s been a tough season for Blue Jays starter Bowden Francis, the right-hander now will need to overcome a shoulder injury.
Francis was placed on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder impingement. Manager John Schneider said Francis’ shoulder has been bothering him for his past two or three starts. Tests on the shoulder revealed no structural damage, just inflammation.
In other news, Max Scherzer is scheduled to throw 70-75 pitches on June 18 for Buffalo (AAA). If it goes well, Scherzer could return next week.
Rehab assignments
One notable reliever started his rehab assignments on the 17th.
Brooks Raley, who re-signed with the Mets earlier this season, made his rehab outing with St. Lucie (A). The left-hander struck out two over one scoreless inning. Raley hit 92 MPH during his outing.
Trevor Stephan, meanwhile, continued with Columbus (AAA). Stephan walked two and gave up a hit during 0.2 IP in relief. The Guardians reliever hit as hard as 93 MPH.
Mark Vientos went 0-4 with two strikeouts for Syracuse (AAA).
Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell went 1-3 with a walk and two runs scored for Nashville (AAA).
Athletics infielder Zack Gelof went 0-1 with two walks with Las Vegas (AAA). Gelof, the DH for the Aviators, came out via substitution in the seventh inning.

The Athletics placed Seth Brown on the injured list with left elbow lateral epicondylitis. It’s retroactive to June 13.
