Since many non-roster invitees have opt-outs that come into effect this weekend, MLB teams are beginning to tip their hands on who will start the year in the Majors. The Tigers and Yankees have finalized starting pitcher moves, as Carlos Carrasco and Jackson Jobe will start the year in their respective rotations.
Carrasco to join Yankees rotation
The Yankees will have three of their 2024 postseason starters on the IL to begin 2025. Gerrit Cole is done for all of this season, while Luis Gil will miss at least the first month with a lat strain. Clarke Schmidt, thanks to a shoulder injury, won’t be ready to start the year with the Yankees.
It opens the door for Carlos Carrasco, a non-roster invite, who will make the team’s Opening Day roster and have his contract selected.
Carrasco had a good spring, as he struck out 15 over 16 innings and touched 94 MPH with his fastball, mostly sitting in the 92-93 MPH range. His mean fastball velocity was 91.4 MPH last season. Also up in the spring was the Whiff% (27.1%), compared to 22.7% last season.
Carrasco will join a rotation including Carlos Rodon, Max Fried, and Marcus Stroman. The Yankees didn’t confirm whether Will Warren will be the team’s fifth starter. But, New York (AL) doesn’t have many other options besides Warren on their roster.
Jobe to start with Detroit
Top Tigers prospect Jackson Jobe locked up a spot on Detroit’s rotation, alongside Casey Mize. Keider Montero, who spent time in the Tigers’ rotation last season, was optioned to Toledo (AAA) today.
Montero, to his credit, didn’t pitch poorly this spring. The right-hander struck out 17 over 14 frames, along with a 3.21 ERA. Mize, though, pitched better, with a 1.13 ERA and 18 strikeouts over 16 frames.
Jobe, meanwhile, pitched fine by and large. The right-hander posted a 0.89 WHIP and opposing hitters only hit .167 off him this spring.
The Tigers’ rookie pitcher made his MLB debut last September as a reliever.
Other notable moves
The Giants optioned Kyle Harrison to Sacramento (AAA) on March 22 after a rough spring. Harrison conceded 13 hits (.429 opp. AVG) and two home runs in Cactus League action.
Harrison was a big swing-and-miss pitcher in the Minors but struggled to limit hard-hit contact last season. Opposing hitters posted a 10.1% Barrel% last season off him, well below the league average.
That leaves Hayden Birdsong (18 K over 12 IP, 0.75 ERA) in a very good position to make it in the rotation, joining Logan Webb, Robbie Ray, and Justin Verlander.
