On getaway day for some Major League clubs, August 26 was a good one for the pitchers. There were six shutouts across the league on the day, highlighted by fantastic performances in Arizona & Seattle. Plus, the Braves picked up another critical win against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Shutouts galore
It started early, as Freddy Peralta tossed six scoreless innings to help the Rays keep the Tigers off the board. Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero each had two hits for the Rays, as Tampa Bay won 3-0.
Eduardo Rodriguez struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, helping the Diamondbacks defeat the Cubs to take the series from Chicago. Rodriguez won his 14th game of the season. Jordan Lawlar hit his third home run of the season.
Five pitchers helped the Padres defeat the Pirates 3-0. Jackson Merrill continued a strong second half with two hits, including an RBI triple.
Jesús Luzardo struck out nine over seven innings, helping the Phillies win 7-0. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber both hit home runs. For Schwarber, it was his league-leading 40th home run of the season.
The Marlins ran all over the Red Sox in a 4-0 shutout win. Miami notched six stolen bases, three from Javier Sanoja and two from Otto Lopez. Starter Ryan Gusto tossed 5.2 innings for Miami.
Finally, a three-run home run from Nathan Lukes was all the Blue Jays needed in a 3-0 victory over the Royals. Seven pitches filled nine innings for Toronto.
Braves walk-off Braves
In a back-and-forth win, the Braves came out on top in Atlanta to defeat the Dodgers 6-5. Atlanta officially took the three-game series, which will end on August 27.
The Dodgers went up 3-1 in the third after Tommy Edman belted a two-run shot. But in the fourth, Austin Riley drove in one with a sac fly. Later on in the inning, Drake Baldwin drove in two with a double. Sean Murphy made it 5-3 with a solo home run in the sixth.
In the seventh inning, Mookie Betts drove in one with a single. And with the bases loaded, Tommy Edman drove in one with a walk from Didier Fuentes.
It was tied until the ninth, when Ha-Seong Kim drove in the game-winning run with a single.
White Sox win 70th game
The White Sox won 10-4 over the Texas Rangers, giving the AL Central leaders their 70th win of the season.
MacKenzie Gore didn’t have a great day, as he allowed eight hits and four walks, marking another day in which the Rangers had to dip into the bullpen early.
Chicago had 15 hits, three of which came from Tristan Peters. It was the second straight day that Peters had three hits, and the fifth straight contest in which he homered.
