In terms of pure talent, there may be no team that has more of it in the 2026 Arizona Fall League season than the Scottsdale Scorpions. The Scorpions’ roster includes several high-profile prospects, two Major Leaguers, and one former All-Star.

The big name among the pitchers is former NL All-Star Randy Rodriguez. Rodriguez, once the closer for the Giants, missed all of 2026 recovering from elbow surgery. The Giants’ bullpen didn’t have a clear leader for much of last season, meaning Rodriguez could easily step into a high-leverage role again in 2027.

Aside from Rodriguez, there is not a ton of star power amongst this group of pitchers. However, there are plenty of interesting names.

Giants prospect Miguel Mendez missed time in 2026 but is one of the better high-upside pitchers in the system. Mendez, acquired in a trade with the Padres this past summer, boasts a triple-digit fastball but will need to command his stuff at the upper levels to have a chance to start.

Ryan Birchard is one of several Rule 5-eligible Brewers prospects with Scottsdale. Big swing-and-miss stuff but Birchard walked a lot of batters in Double-A, where he spent much of the year as a reliever.

6’5” reliever Mason Nichols struck out 73 over 58 innings this past season in A-ball. Nichols was a ninth-round pick by Tampa Bay back in 2025.

Catchers

Nathan FlewellingRays
Matthew WoodBrewers

Yes, there is a Phillie on the roster, being Luke Davis. Davis will serve as the extra backstop on a Scottsdale roster that has two premium catchers.

One is Nathan Flewelling, who should be more well-known to the general baseball public. Flewelling had a mini-breakout in 2025 with Low-A Charleston before a more substantial one in 2026.

Flewelling got off to a roaring start to 2026, which ultimately ended with him hitting 21 home runs in High-A this season. He walks a lot, and he hits for pop. There is the high swing-and-miss, which ticked up later in the year.

Matthew Wood is a Rule 5-eligible catcher and may very well be taken should he be exposed. Wood hit 18 home runs in just 95 games, a career-best for the former fourth-round pick. The 25-year-old walked 71 times juxtaposed to 52 strikeouts, a very impressive feat when noting that Wood had one of the best take percentages in Double-A.

It’s a deep pool of players here, headlined by Tigers infielder John Peck. Peck, the other Major Leaguer on this roster, hit .176/.275/.176 in 24 contests with Detroit this season.

A very eclectic mix of players amongst the infield core. Eric Bitonti and Bryce Rainer both project as above-average power hitters. Rainer, a former first-round pick by the Tigers, saw a significant jump in Whiff% down the stretch with High-A West Michigan.

The Giants sent Kaeden Kent, acquired from the Yankees in July, along with Dalton Wentz. As noted earlier in the year, Wentz was a late-round pick who was snared with an above-average bonus. Switch-hitter who showed a lot of pop and bat speed in Wake Forest.

Nick Monistere was a fourth-round pick by the Astros in 2025. Monistere hasn’t had much luck producing offensively over the course of his pro career. Through two seasons, the 22-year-old slashed .178/.281/.272 in 80 contests.

Jett Williams came over to the Brewers in January via the Freddy Peralta trade. Williams came into the year as a top prospect with plus plate discipline and speed. However, he slashed .233/.340/.384 in 81 games with Triple-A Nashville.

Outfielders

Scottsdale has some power hitters amongst the outfield core.

Braylon Payne is a former first-rounder who hit 28 home runs this past year. Jordan hit 19 in 102 contests, and Zyhir Hope blasted 29 home runs between the Dodgers and Tigers’ systems. Hope was the headliner in the Tarik Skubal trade from August.

Brendan Summerhill was a 2025 first-round pick with a plus hit tool.
