An injury-hampered Astros team will now have to contend with another loss, as Jose Altuve is headed to the injured list. The Mariners, meanwhile, saw one of their infielders land on the IL again on May 17, and another forced out the team’s contest against the San Diego Padres.

Altuve going to IL

Astros infielder Jose Altuve will be placed on the IL, per manager Joe Espada.

Altuve left the Astros’ game on May 16 due to what was reported as a side injury. He did not play on the 17th and suffered a Grade 2 oblique strain, which should keep him out beyond the minimum time on the IL.

There is some good news, as Jeremy Pena rejoined the team and could be activated from the IL this week (h/t MLB.com).

Donovan has groin strain

Mariners infielder Brendan Donovan was placed on the IL with a strained left groin muscle. It is retroactive to May 16, one day after Donovan played his last game to date.

He will receive a shot for his groin, per the Seattle Times.

IL moves

Pirates 1B/OF Ryan O’Hearn was placed on the IL with a right quad strain.

Jose Trevino was placed on the IL with a left hamstring injury.

Rays outfielder Jake Fraley was placed on the injured list with a hernia.

Dodgers pitcher Jack Dreyer landed on the IL with left shoulder discomfort.

Right forearm discomfort forced Blue Jays reliever Tommy Nance to the IL.

Tigers pitcher Ty Madden was placed on the injured list with a right forearm contusion.

Other notes

Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford suffered a triceps contusion on May 17.

Byron Buxton (hip) and Corey Seager (back) did not play for their respective teams.
