A lot of injury news from May 16. Both the Rangers and Astros are dealing with infield injuries, while the Red Sox will be without Trevor Story for some time. The Yankees, meanwhile, saw Gerrit Cole push to nearly 90 pitches in a rehab outing with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Seager sits with back spasms
Per reports out of Houston, Rangers shortstop Corey Seager sat out on May 16 due to back spasms (h/t MLB.com).
It is the second straight game that Seager has missed. He’s currently in a 4-42 stretch at the dish.
Altuve leaves game
Astros infielder Jose Altuve was removed from the team’s game against Texas due to a side injury.
He will undergo an MRI on May 17.
IL placements
Giants outfielder Heliot Ramos was placed on the IL with a quad strain.
Royals reliever Matt Strahm was placed on the IL with right knee inflammation.
Right shoulder inflammation forced Ben Joyce to the 60-day IL.
Mets pitcher Clay Holmes is now on the IL with a fractured fibula. Per the team, Holmes is believed to need three months to return.
Meanwhile, Trevor Story is on the IL with a sports hernia. He will undergo second opinions, per the Red Sox shortstop himself. If he needs surgery, he’ll likely miss at least six to 10 weeks (h/t Boston Globe).
Rehab assignments
Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole struck out six over 5.1 IP (86 pitches) with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Of note was Cole’s velocity, which has sat anywhere from the low-to-mid-90s thus far. On the 16th, Cole hit 99.6 MPH for a high and averaged 97 MPH.
Astros shortstop Jeremy Pena went 1-4 for Double-A Corpus Christi. Also in that game, Jake Meyers went 0-4 with a strikeout.
Athletics outfielder Denzel Clarke went 1-3 with an RBI for Low-A Stockton.
Other notes
Byron Buxton (hip) and Christian Yelich (back) were both out of their respective teams’ starting lineups on May 16.
