April 14 marked another rehab outing for Zack Wheeler and the start of Anthony Volpe’s road back to The Bronx. It was also a day when several players had to leave games due to injury, while Ketel Marte was scratched because of a back injury.
Marte scratched
The Diamondbacks made second baseman Ketel Marte a late scratch on April 14. Per the team, it was due to back tightness.
After the game, manager Torey Lovullo stated that Marte is day-to-day and could return to the D-Backs’ lineup on April 15.
Collins leaves game
Royals outfielder Isaac Collins had to leave his team’s game against the Tigers after he hit the fence while attempting to field a ball.
Per the team, he was removed due to a right knee contusion.
IL placements
In other D-Backs injury news, the team placed catcher Gabriel Moreno on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain.
The Brewers placed outfielder Christian Yelich on the 10-day IL with a groin strain. He’s not expected to come back until mid-to-late May (h/t Milwaukee Journal Sentinel). Additionally, Rob Zastryzny was placed on the 60-day IL with a left shoulder strain.
Nick Pivetta, who left his start on April 12 due to an elbow injury, was placed on the IL with right elbow inflammation.
Cubs pitcher Ethan Roberts was placed on the IL with a right middle finger laceration.
Rehab assignments
Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler struck out nine over 5.2 IP with Double-A Reading against the Yankees’ Double-A team.
Speaking of the Yankees, Anthony Volpe played his first rehab game in that contest. With Somerset, Volpe went 0-2 with two strikeouts.
Astros pitcher Bennett Sousa struck out two in one inning for Double-A Corpus Christi.
Braves catcher Sean Murphy went 0-2 with one strikeout with High-A Rome.
Dodgers reliever Brock Stewart struck out three over one inning with Low-A Ontario.
Marlins outfielder Kyle Stowers went 0-4 with Triple-A Jacksonville.
As for Jackson Holliday, the Orioles infielder was pulled off his rehab assignment due to right wrist soreness.
Other notes
Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras had to leave his team’s game against the Twins due to lower back tightness.
Emilio Pagan will be evaluated for a hamstring injury, per Reds manager Terry Francona.
Mets outfielder Jared Young is out with left knee discomfort, per manager Carlos Mendoza.
Ryan Pepiot (Rays), Pavin Smith (Diamondbacks), and Johan Oviedo (Red Sox) were all transferred to the 60-day IL.
