Now that the 2026 Spring Training games are underway, baseball fans can get their first real look at the players who may define the season. But at the same time, games also mean injury reports. And, several players who’ve yet to play in this camp are already dealing with injuries, including Joe Ryan.

Ryan scratched from start

Twins pitcher Joe Ryan was scheduled to start the team’s first Grapefruit League game this spring. However, Ryan was scratched shortly before the start with a back injury.

Per the New York Times, Ryan was set to undergo an MRI, and the Twins should have an update on the right-hander before the end of the weekend.

It’s a big loss, for several reasons. One, Ryan pitched like an ace last season, as he struck out 194 over 171 batters in an All-Star season. Two, the Twins are already down Pablo Lopez, set to undergo season-ending elbow surgery next week.

Kelly dealing with back problems

Like Ryan, Merrill Kelly is dealing with his own back problems.

The Diamondbacks pitcher had his scheduled live BP session for February 21 cancelled due to back tightness. Per the team, Kelly will undergo imaging. However, manager Torey Lovullo noted that the team doesn’t have a high level of concern regarding his back injury.

Updates on Rays’ injuries

No Chandler Simpson for the Rays on February 21, which wasn’t a shock.

Per the Tampa Bay Times, Simpson will miss the first few games of Grapefruit League action thanks to hamstring tightness.

Additionally, left-hander Shane McClanahan faced hitters in a live BP session on the 21st. McClananhan missed all of the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

Other notes

The Dodgers placed INF/OF Enrique Hernandez on the 60-day IL. It was a corresponding move, as Hernandez is recovering from elbow surgery and the Dodgers recently claimed Jack Suwinski off waivers.
