Both Dylan Cease & Jared Jones flirted with history on July 8. However, the outcomes for their two teams’ respective games on the day were different. Additionally, the Marlins and Rays continue to win games.
Blue Jays, Cease shine
Just before Dylan Cease returned to San Diego, the Blue Jays’ right-hander nearly threw his second career no-hitter, two years after his first with the Padres.
Cease struck out 11 over eight no-hit innings for Toronto, in what was an easy 10-0 victory for the Giants. However, his bid was broken up by outfielder Heliot Ramos. Former Giant Tyler Rogers finished out the game in the ninth.
It was also a big day for the Jays’ offense, which had 11 total hits. Kazuma Okamoto hit his 21st home run, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer also went deep.
Jones tosses six perfect innings
For the second time in a week, a bid for a solo perfect game was scuttlebutted by a pitcher removal.
This time, it happened to Jared Jones, who struck out eight over six perfect innings for the Pirates. But in a scoreless game after six, Jones was pulled. In the eighth, reliever Dennis Santana surrendered a two-run shot to ex-Pirate Joey Bart, who provided the game-winning run in a 3-0 victory.
Atlanta’s bullpen followed up Grant Holmes‘ five scoreless innings with four scoreless.
Florida teams with shutout wins
The Braves needed that win, as the Marlins are very close to passing Atlanta in the NL East. Miami shut out the Mariners 2-0 to remain three games behind the Braves.
Yet again, the Marlins received stellar pitching, as Tyler Phillips tossed five scoreless innings before the bullpen finished the job. Miami’s runs came off a Kyle Stowers solo shot and an Xavier Edwards triple.
George Kirby struck out seven over six innings in a losing effort.
As for the Rays, Tampa Bay shut out the Yankees 3-0, pushing New York (AL) to a five-game deficit for the division. Jonathan Aranda drove in all three runs, while Shane McClanahan tossed 6.1 scoreless innings.
McGreevy stifles Brewers
The Cardinals got back in the win column, as St. Louis won 5-1 over the Brewers.
Jordan Walker and Alec Burleson each had two hits, with one of those hits for Burleson being a two-run shot off Kyle Harrison.
Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy struck out six and gave up one earned run over 6.1 innings.
