Amidst a pivotal time for the Detroit Tigers, the club added another reliever for A.J. Hinch to use in his bullpen. Tyler Kinley, who spent the past few seasons with the Braves before he was released earlier this month, is now in Detroit.

Tigers add Kinley

The Tigers signed Tyler Kinley to a Major League contract.

Kinley, a slider-heavy pitcher, was designated for assignment a week earlier by the Atlanta Braves. He was stung by the home run ball this season, as Kinley allowed nine home runs over 42.2 IP. However, Kinley, primarily a three-pitch pitcher between his slider, curveball, and fastball, was a valuable piece of the Braves’ 2025 bullpen.

Velazquez re-signs with Astros

The Astros re-signed outfielder Nelson Velazquez.

Velazquez didn’t last long on the free agent market. After he elected free agency after being outrighted on August 23, Houston re-signed him one day later. He saw just four at-bats with Houston before he was DFA’d on the 20th.

Recalls & options

Braves outfielder Brewer Hicklen became the rare player to be optioned and recalled on the same day. Hicklen, along with Bo Naylor (Brewers), was the 27th man for their respective clubs for the 2026 Little League Classic. However, he was recalled after Atlanta optioned Jim Jarvis to Triple-A.

Nate Furman (Giants), Anthony Molina (Giants), Shay Whitcomb (Giants), Juan Burgos (Diamondbacks), Grant McCray (Giants), and Ryan Walker (Giants) were recalled from the Minors.

Sung Mun Song (Padres), Ray Delgado (Astros), Shay Whitcomb (Giants), Matt Wilkinson (Giants), Deyvison De Los Santos (Marlins), Mitch Bratt (Diamondbacks), Brendan Beck (Yankees), Bo Naylor (Brewers), and Ty Madden (Tigers) were optioned.

Other notes

Dustin Harris (Padres) and Blake Adams (Rockies) had their contracts selected from Triple-A.

Owen Miller (Cubs) and Jhonathan Diaz (Mariners) were sent outright to Triple-A.

The Tigers designated pitcher Ricky Vanasco for assignment.

Orioles pitcher Albert Suarez elected free agency.
