It was a light day of action across Major League Baseball on July 23, as just five games were contested. The Braves ended on a high note in their series with the Padres, while the Blue Jays, fading in the American League playoff race, picked up a win against the Rays.
Braves take down Padres
Chris Sale picked up his 11th win of the 2026 season, and the Braves picked up their 60th overall, in a 6-5 win over the Padres.
San Diego put up three on Sale in the second, as Fernando Tatis Jr. drove in the first run with a walk. Then, Luis Rengifo drove in two with a single. But the Braves got one back in the second thanks to a Michael Harris II solo home run. Then, in the fourth, two home runs, one from Ozzie Albies and a three-run home run from Dominic Smith, pushed Atlanta up 5-3.
Drake Baldwin tallied one more with a solo home run off Matt Waldron.
Blue Jays pick up win against Rays
The Rays were bidding for their 60th win of 2026 on the 23rd. However, Shane Bieber kept the Rays off the board for the most part in a 3-1 victory.
Bieber allowed one run and struck out three over seven innings, in what might have been a showcase game before the 2026 Trade Deadline. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Alejandro Kirk, and George Springer all had RBIs for Toronto.
Ian Seymour, who pitched in bulk relief for the Rays, struck out seven and allowed two earned runs over six innings pitched.
Tigers pick up big win versus Royals
With the Twins picking up a win earlier in the day, the Tigers needed a win to keep pace. Detroit did get it, as the Tigers defeated the Royals 4-3.
After five shutout innings from Troy Melton, a two-run home run for Isaac Collins drove in the first runs of the game. James Outman, though, put the Tigers in front thanks to a three-run shot in the seventh.
The Royals and Tigers traded runs in the eighth. Drew Anderson picked up the win in relief, while Kyle Finnegan picked up a save.
