Several playoff hopefuls had big days on August 14, including the Padres, Diamondbacks, and Astros. The Miami Marlins, fighting for position in the NL Wild Card race, did not, as the club was stymied by Reds ace Chase Burns in Cincinnati.
Reds sharp in victory
Chase Burns tossed seven scoreless innings against the Marlins on August 14, and the Reds’ bullpen closed it out with two scoreless innings of their own to clinch a 1-0 win over Miami.
It’s a big win for the Reds, a club that now stands at 59-62 and on the outskirts of the playoff race. But the Reds’ ace did his job in a game where he struck out eight and lowered his 2026 ERA to 2.47.
Eugenio Suarez drove in Tyler Stephenson via an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, the lone run in the game.
Baltimore beats Tampa on road
The Rays were spotless during their three-city road trip in August. However, the club returned home and lost on August 14, falling to the Orioles 6-5.
Tampa scored three in the ninth, thanks to a two-run single from Jonathan Aranda and an RBI groundout from Junior Caminero. But it wasn’t enough to get past Gunnar Henderson and the Orioles. Henderson had four hits, one of which was his 20th home run. That was a two-run home run that made it a 6-2 contest.
Chris Bassitt allowed two earned runs over 5.1 IP in his return from the IL.
Cubs shut out Cardinals
A three-run home run from Seiya Suzuki, his 21st of the year, was all the Cubs needed in a 3-2 win on a Friday afternoon in Wrigley Field.
Clay Holmes was fantastic in his second start with the club. Holmes induced 11 ground balls and struck out three over 6.2 scoreless innings. Ryan Rolison, Ryan Zeferjahn, and Jacob Webb made up the remaining innings.
Matthew Liberatore was charged with two runs and struck out six in a losing effort.
Pfaadt excellent yet again
The Diamondbacks defeated the Braves 2-0 in the first game of the two clubs’ series in Atlanta.
Chris Sale pitched well against Arizona. Sale struck out nine over six innings and allowed just one run. That lone run was a Gabriel Moreno RBI groundout. However, that was all that Brandon Pfaadt needed.
Pfaadt was brilliant over seven innings, as he struck out seven, allowed two hits, and didn’t walk anyone to pick up his seventh win of the 2026 season. He lowered his ERA to 3.11.
Astros walk off Mariners
The Astros and Mariners had a wild game in Houston, one that ultimately ended with a 10-7 win for the home team.
Seattle scored three unanswered runs, one in the sixth and two in the eighth, to tie it after the Astros went out to a 5-2 lead in the second. In the 10th inning, a Victor Robles triple and Brock Rodden sac fly made it 7-5 Seattle.
But in the bottom half of the inning, Isaac Paredes cut the lead to one with a single. Daulton Varsho tied it with a single. Christian Walker hit a three-run home run that drove in Jose Altuve and Varsho, plus himself, to give Houston the walkoff win.
